There is nothing quite like the great outdoors. From mountains to valleys and waterfalls to lakes, there are incredible outdoor destinations in America that are full of adventure and beauty. If you love to spend time outdoors like I do, the following 13 U.S. destinations need to be on your bucket list. These not only make for incredible vacation spots but they are surrounded by natural beauty and are packed with activities. These are some of the best travel destinations in the U.S. that outdoor enthusiasts will love.

Northwest

1. Kenai Peninsula, Alaska

It is hard to find a place more beautiful than the Kenai Peninsula. This area is known as Alaska’s Playground and for good reason — there is so much to do and see here. Two must-visit destinations in the area include Kenai Lake and Kenai River, which are both popular for fishing and paddling. If you want a little more challenge on the water, head to Six Mile Creek, where you can experience a heart-racing whitewater rafting adventure.

You’ll also find dozens of incredible hikes on the Kenai Peninsula as this area is home to one of the most developed trail systems in Alaska. Just make sure that during any outdoor adventure in Alaska, you stay alert and watch for wildlife. You never know what majestic creatures may come say “hello.”

2. Cannon Beach, Oregon

Cannon Beach is the type of place where you visit once and you’ll quickly fall in love with the town. Located along the Oregon Coast, this small town of approximately 1,500 residents is the ultimate destination for outdoor fun. Here, you’ll find miles of sandy beaches with picturesque rock formations like the famous Haystack Rock. This town is also located near multiple state parks such as Oswald West State Park and Ecola State Park, one of my favorite parks in Oregon filled with hiking trails, a lighthouse, and whale-watching opportunities.

Cannon Beach has also received recognition as one of the world's most beautiful places, so make sure to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the views here — they truly are magical.

3. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho

At the top of every outdoor enthusiast’s bucket list should be Yellowstone National Park. Featuring the most unique hydrothermal and geological features in the country, this is a destination where one day is not enough time to explore. In fact, as someone who has visited Yellowstone National Park every year for two decades, I still see something new each time I return.

You can always visit popular natural wonders like Yellowstone Lake, Old Faithful, and Mammoth Hot Springs. But, I also recommend hiking to Artist Paint Pots, fly fishing on the Madison River, and chasing the lesser-known waterfalls that dot the park.

Southwest

4. Lake Tahoe, Nevada and California

It doesn’t matter the time of the year, Lake Tahoe is filled with outdoor activities for the entire family. We love visiting during the summer months when you can spend your days boating and fishing. Don't forget to play on the beach, take in the views on the 72 miles of shoreline, or even put on your hiking boots and tackle one of the many trails surrounding the lake. Biking and golfing opportunities are also plentiful near this lake.

Of course, winter is just as stunning as the water creates a mesmerizing view while skiing and snowboarding at the world-class ski resorts. You can also snowmobile, sled, cross-country ski, snowshoe, or even ice skate. There’s really no shortage of options here.

5. Zion National Park

Zion National Park in southern Utah is one of the most popular national parks in America and for good reason. This national park is home to 230 square miles of canyons, natural arches, red rocks, and beautiful skies. Many people come to Zion for its popular hiking trails including Angels Landing. However, you should also add The Narrows to your hiking bucket list as this is considered one of the best slot canyon hikes in the world — just be prepared to get wet.

If you want a few more easy hikes, consider the Lower Emerald Pool Trail and the Riverside Walk. I also love to explore Zion and practice my landscape photography. The overlooks here are breathtaking and you’ll find natural features throughout this park including rivers, waterfalls, rock formations, and more.

6. Boulder, Colorado

Located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in northern Colorado, Boulder has it all. Not only are there plenty of urban activities to keep you busy, but it’s home to some of the best outdoor recreational activities in the country. In the area around this Colorado city, you can enjoy 300 miles of hiking and biking trails, water activities, and gorgeous camping spots. Fishing and rock climbing are also in abundance here as well as kayaking and river rafting. If visiting in the winter, hop on a fat bike, pull out your cross-country skis or snowshoes, and even do some skiing and snowboarding. It’s almost impossible to be bored in Boulder.

Midwest

7. Cache River State Natural Area, Illinois

Cache River State Natural Area is the type of place that’s impossible to forget. It is located in Southern Illinois and on the Cache River. This area is known for its stunning cypress trees that are not only large and old, but also tower over swampy areas. If you are looking for a day trip outdoors in Illinois, this destination offers paddling and fishing opportunities galore. Keep in mind that camping is not allowed at the Cache River State Natural Area but there are campgrounds just a short drive away.

8. Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Voyageurs National Park is a water-based national park. This unique destination is 218,000 acres filled with lakes and streams. This is a popular camping spot but all campsites require a watercraft to access – it is truly the perfect place to escape the worries of the world. Voyageurs National Park is also where you can enjoy unforgettable stargazing. You'll never forget a night under the stars at this Minnesota national park.

South

9. Asheville, North Carolina

Tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this remarkable North Carolina city has something for everyone including outdoor enthusiasts. There are more than one million acres of protected wilderness in the area, providing countless opportunities for outdoor fun. For example, you can spend some time kayaking the French Broad River and even throw in a line and try your luck fishing. You may want to chase waterfalls (such as Looking Glass Falls) or even cool off by taking a ride on the Sliding Rock Natural Waterslide. I also recommend riding your bike in the city and the mountains.

10. Chattanooga, Tennessee

You may consider Chattanooga, Tennessee paradise if you love the great outdoors. This remarkable city has received many awards for its incredible outdoor opportunities. Adventure seekers can easily participate in whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and mountain biking all within a short drive of the city. There are also paddling and hiking opportunities if you want something a little more calm and relaxing.

The Catskill Mountains will impress you the minute you arrive. Located in southeastern New York State, these mountains are full of outdoor adventure. In fact, they are well known for their impressive network of trails that take you through forests and to beautiful waterfalls. Plus, you’ll find trails for beginners to advanced hikers and of all distances.

There is so much to love about Burlington, Vermont. This city of approximately 45,000 people sits on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain and is bustling with activities. Enjoy picnics in the city parks or visit waterfalls such as Bingham Falls, Bristol Falls, and Moss Glen Falls. Explore Mount Mansfield State Park or the Rock Point Trails. Play at North Beach Park or unleash your competitive side during a round of golf at one of the many nearby courses.

13. Acadia National Park, Maine

If you are an outdoor lover, one visit to Acadia National Park will not be enough. You will want to return over and over again. Of course, you can hike and be dazzled by the breathtaking overlooks and views throughout this national park in Maine but there’s so much more. Hop on a bike and explore the 45 miles of historic carriage roads. Go stargazing and enjoy the breathtaking sky or wake up and view the lovely sunrise. Go for a swim at Swim Echo Lake Beach or explore the tide pools around the park. I particularly love visiting historic places and there are many inside Acadia National Park including fire towers, lighthouses, bridges, and more.
