Angels Landing is one of the most famous hikes in Zion National Park. With views of the entire valley and a hiking trail that takes you along switchbacks, heart-stopping cliffs, and to breathtaking views, it is easy to see why. The trail is extremely popular and provides visitors with a hike much different than other hikes in the area, as the last half-mile requires hikers to use chains for balance and support!

Angels Landing Trail

The top of Angels Landing rises 1,488 feet above the valley floor and has been accessible since 1926 when a trail was cut into the rock.

If you find yourself asking, "how long is Angels Landing hike?" Don't worry, it's not that far. Although, while the trail may only be 2.5 miles long (each way) it is not for the faint of heart. The trail begins at the Grotto Trailhead near the Virgin River before rising above the canyons.

Always make sure you have proper gear before you start this hike including sunscreen, adequate water, hat, etc.

How long does it take to hike Angels Landing? Well, conquering this hike can take anywhere from three to six hours depending on your fitness level. However, many people never make it to the top. It is not only extremely challenging, but quite dangerous as well.

Keep in mind that individuals with medical conditions and small children should avoid this trail and if you are afraid of heights, this hike may not be for you.

You will begin on a paved trail that doesn’t seem too difficult, but it does become quite steep. As you climb, you’ll enter Refrigerator Canyon, aptly named for this cool and shady area of the park.

Once you step out of the canyon, you will enter Walter’s Wiggles – a set of 21 unique Angels Landing switchbacks that are set right into the side of the mountain.

Walter’s Wiggles is one of the most challenging portions of Angels Landing and is an area where many people require medical attention. Take your time, go slowly, and simply enjoy the views.

Once you make it to the top of Walter's Wiggles, you’ll reach Scout Lookout, the Angels Landing chain section.

Here, you’ll receive incredible incredible views but this is where the trail becomes narrow, steep, and extremely dangerous. You’ll want to hold onto the chain and watch your step as there are drop-offs right next to the trail.

Angels Landing Views

When you reach the top of the trail, you will feel like you are on top of the world — literally! While Angels Landing offers breathtaking views throughout the entire trail, the end of the hike is gorgeous and you will receive incredible views of Zion Canyon.

Seriously, the views make every step of this trail well worth it.

However, I do recommend taking a break and staring down Walter’s Wiggles – the views are absolutely remarkable and it’s a great way to see the progress you have made.

Dangers Of Angels Landing Trail

It is no secret that while Angels Landing is one of the most popular trails in Zion National Park, it is also one of the most dangerous.

Many injuries and even deaths have occurred on the trail. In fact, as of 2023, 17 confirmed deaths have occurred on the Angels Landing Trail, with falling the primary cause.

However, the steep climb and the risk of falls are not the only dangers on this trail. Many people also require medical attention due to dehydration. While the trail isn’t that long, it is challenging and the cruel southern Utah sun makes the outdoor conditions difficult.

Of course, you can’t overlook the weather at Zion National Park as well. While the sun can make the trail hot, the entire area can also become extremely hazardous during thunderstorms, darkness, and in ice/snow conditions.

Safety Tips For Angels Landing

To ensure you find success and remain safe on Angels Landing, proper preparation is critical. You must wear proper footwear and use a hat, sunscreen, etc. As mentioned earlier, properly hydrating is also crucial.

Patience is necessary on this trail. Be patient as you climb, particularly on the chain section of the trail. Some people will go slower on this portion of the hike — expect it and be willing to take your time.

Also, don’t feel the need to get right on the edge for a photo. Take your photo from a safe vantage point. A dangerous photo isn’t worth the potential cost.

Angels Landing Permits

Not just anyone can hop on the Angels Landing Trail and explore. Rather, you must have a permit.

In April 2022, Zion National Park launched its Angels Landing Pilot Permit Program. The purpose of the permit is to evenly distribute hiker start times throughout the day and to reduce crowding and congestion on the trail. But, you may still be wondering how to get a permit to hike Angels Landing.

If you plan to hike Angels Landing during the summer months, you will not want to delay obtaining a permit. Thousands of applications are sent for permits during the summer months and while there is no guarantee, there are several things you can do to improve your chances.

For example, to improve your chances, fill out the application in its entirety. Also, pick multiple hike start times and days that work best for your group.

Keep in mind that no more than six individuals can be in a group. Plus, if your group size will change depending on the day/time, make that known on the application as well.

If you miss the deadline or your application is not accepted, consider checking out the day-before lotteries. Each day, between 12:01 a.m. and 3 p.m. MST, a smaller lottery opens to obtain hiking permits for the following day. There are also lotteries that occur quarterly if you wish to tackle Angels Landing during a different time of year.
