We can easily argue that the city of Austin is not only the best in Texas, but the best in the entire country. With our vibrant music and art scene, incredible restaurants, amazing outdoor recreation and more, it’s a great place to live. However, some neighborhoods in Austin are better than others. The site RoadSnacks.com recently presented a list of the 10 worst. The site considered several factors when making this list, including unemployment, low income, low property value and crime rates.
The Martin Luther King - Hwy 183 neighborhood ranked first on the list due to its low median income of just $30,851 and its crime rate, which is 97 percent higher than the national average. 15.97 crimes per 100,000 people occur daily in this neighborhood.
The overall crime rate in Montopolis is 112 percent higher than the national average, and you have a 1 in 16 chance of being the victim of a crime here.
The small community of Mlk has just over 4,000 residents, and an average property value of $150,220. The crime rate is 60 percent higher than the national average.
The crime rate in the Georgian Acres neighborhood is 137 percent higher than the national average, but due to its size (9,144 people), you only have a 1 in 20 chance of being the victim of a crime, and the property value is higher than other neighborhoods, with a median value of $120,300.
The Franklin Park community has about 16,466 residents who have a 1 in 16 chance of being the victim of a crime. An estimated 6,639 crimes per 100,000 people occur here.
The residents of Govalle have just a 1 in 26 chance of being the victim of a crime, and its median home value is the highest on this list, at $182,600. However, the overall crime rate here is still 33 percent higher than the national average.
Living in Rosewood, you have a 1 in 24 chance of being the victim of a crime, and the crime rate here is 42 percent higher than the national average. However, its higher median home value of $173,840 keeps it lower on this list.
