This Walkable German City in Texas Is a Must-Visit Gem

Fredericksburg, Texas: experience an authentic taste of Germany in a truly walkable city.

As my husband has been stationed in Germany for the last few years, I jumped at the opportunity to visit the quaint German town of Fredericksburg, Texas. This walkable city in Texas combines two of my favorite things: German culture and walkability. As a Chicagoan, I’ve gone more than 30 years without owning a car. I know walkability. In a big, beautiful state like Texas, you might assume you need a vehicle. I’m here to say that while a car can be helpful, there are plenty of things to do in Fredericksburg, Texas, that require only your two feet.

Why Fredericksburg, Texas Is So Easy To Explore on Foot

Fredericksburg has a beautiful and extensive Main Street. There are museums, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and more, all located on one bustling street. What is particularly special is that chains are not allowed in the National Historic District, which runs all along Main Street. Part of what makes the city so walkable is its history. Founded in 1846 by German immigrants, it was typical of the time for all the main shops and businesses to be in one central location. That history is well preserved and speaks to why the community is so walkable. Plus, even today, walkability is still alive and well in Europe.

The Best Things To See Within Walking Distance of Fredericksburg

There are a variety of interesting things to see and do along Main Street. To gain a full understanding of the area’s history, visit the Pioneer Museum. This 3.5-acre interactive museum shows off original buildings, artifacts, and displays from the original German immigrants. When I visited, I was lucky enough to see and hear a gathering of local residents who regularly meet at the museum to practice German and keep the language alive within the community.

Another must-stop, just a short walk away from Main Street, is the National Museum of the Pacific War. Across more than 55,000 square feet of exhibit space and three galleries, this museum shares a deeper experience of the Pacific Theater than most of us have ever experienced in an educational institution.

Where To Eat, Shop, and Relax Along the Way

After fueling up on your history, it will be time to refuel your stomach and shopping bags at this walkable town in Texas. A great place to both stay overnight and grab a meal is The Restaurant at Albert Hotel. The Restaurant strives to incorporate local ingredients from the beautiful Texas Hill Country, in which Fredericksburg is located. Another great option for a hearty meal is an Italian dinner at Alla Campagna. I also really enjoyed Vaudeville, which is a fun combination of a bistro, wine club, and boutique.

There are seemingly endless shops along Main Street proper. Of course, the city is so walkable that you can even hop over a few streets to beloved storefronts like Carol Hicks Bolton, Neighbor, and Blackchalk Home & Laundry. All of which feel trendy and are absolutely adorable to walk into and explore.

What Makes Fredericksburg Truly Stunning

Of course, what really makes this city unique is its deep connection to its German roots. The city has done well in its attempts to preserve both the language and the culture. You’ll see many signs still in German, and even hear it spoken every so often as you walk around. Many businesses nod to their heritage, like Otto’s German Bistro. As someone who has spent years of her life in Germany, I can truly say Fredericksburg felt closer to the real deal than anywhere else in the United States. Plus, the surrounding Texas Hill Country nature is just plain beautiful.
