Idaho is beautiful. I have lived and traveled all across the state from the panhandle to southern Idaho and each area is full of natural beauty. However, to enjoy many one-of-a-kind scenes, you will need to put forth a little extra effort. Although, there is one destination where little walking is required and the view is going to inspire you in every way — Lookout Butte Lookout.
Lookout Butte Lookout is a 60-foot tower in the Moose Creek District of the Nez Perce National Forest. It is one of the best places to view some of Mother Nature’s greatest creations in Northern Idaho.
To reach Lookout Butte Lookout, you will travel to Lowell. Cross the Selway Bridge, drive 3.5 miles, and cross the Swiftwater Bridge on your right. You will continue for 13 miles to reach the lookout.
This is a seasonal lookout tower that you must reserve to visit. It is a great place to spend the night — the sunset and sunrise views are hard to compare.
Lookout Butte Lookout is 60 feet tall and offers panoramic views. You can easily spend hours staring at the scene in front of you.
Even better, you don’t have to hike to the tower. You can drive right to Lookout Butte Lookout but be prepared — you will need to climb the stairs to the top. A high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended to reach the tower.
Up to four people can stay at the lookout. Inside, you’ll find two twin beds and two cots. There are a small number of amenities available such as a propane stove and oven, table and chairs, and cleaning supplies. You will want to bring food and cooking supplies, bedding, flashlights, binoculars, a camera, and anything else you might need for some time away from home.
Lookout Butte Lookout is a bucket-list-worthy destination where you can enjoy gorgeous views, stargaze, observe wildlife, and fall in love with Idaho all over again. It’s pure bliss.
