If there's one thing that's true about West Virginia, it's that we have some incredible food. Part of West Virginia's unique culture includes its unique choices of favorite foods. From ramps to apple butter, these are some of the most iconic West Virginia foods that we have come to love in the Mountain State. If you grew up here, then this will hit all the nostalgic notes. If you're visiting the Mountain State, be sure to try one or two of these iconic foods while you're here.
1. Biscuits
We love our biscuits here, and for good reason.
2. Apple butter
Apple butter is a fall-time tradition and one of those West Virginia foods that you'll see everywhere once that first cold snap hits. Try it on biscuits, pancakes, toast, or just go for a spoonful!
3. Ramps
Ramps, shown here on this delicious pizza, are a favorite in West Virginia. During the spring there are a ton of ramp dinners in the state.
4. Italian food
It may be odd to call another country's food an icon for a state, but we have a lot of great Italian food options here. During the 20th century, West Virginia saw a large influx of Italian immigrants, resulting in some of the best Italian restaurants peppering the state.
5. Beans and cornbread
This is a classic food combination in West Virginia and it's so good. It's one of those hearty, feel-good, comfort foods that just checks all the right boxes.
6. Pepperoni rolls
These are a West Virginia tradition that started in the coal mines. Miners needed something to carry to eat with them in the mines. These pepperoni rolls did quite nicely.
7. Venison
What else would a state with a lot of deer hunters like besides venison? It's delicious.
8. Hot dogs
We love our hot dogs here. Hillbilly Hot Dogs in Lesage has some of the best hot dogs in West Virginia, and they've been a bit of a local landmark for well over 20 years.
