They've put up with every joke about not being true Montanans and endured numerous stereotypes, some of which don't apply to them. And still, the people of Missoula, Montana go on about their lives, happily living in their hippie town. And we can't say we blame them. This is one of the best towns in Montana to visit.

Put aside any personal feelings you may have about Missoulians and visit this beautiful city. There's plenty in the area to make it well worth your while.

We'll be the first to admit that there's a different vibe in Missoula than the rest of the state, but that's partially due to the fact that it attracts so many creative types.

The city has become a magnet for artists, hippies, and river surfers.

This is part of the reason for Missoula's "hippie" reputation.

The University of Montana has been around since 1893.

In a state where most of us live in small towns, it's nice to visit a place with plenty of big city amenities.

Missoula's population is 72,364 (as of 2016), a mid-sized city (at best) in other states, but in "The Treasure State," that's pretty large.

At The Buttercup Market and Cafe, friends gather to catch up on life over locally sourced, made-from-scratch food.

The coffee and breakfast here is excellent, and you can shop for local gifts and market items while you're there. Note: The Buttercup Market and Cafe has permanently closed.

The Notorious PIG is more than just a creatively named restaurant.

They serve some of the tastiest BBQ in the entire state.

Finding good sushi isn't always easy in Montana, but Missoula has no shortage of it.

This is the battera at Sushi Hana.

While there's a lot more to this city than its food, you should definitely check out one of the local markets while you're in town.

Both the Clark Fork Market and the Missoula Farmers Market are incredible.

A Carousel for Missoula is one of the first fully hand-carved carousels built in the USA since the Great Depression.

Even if you're past the point of enjoying a carousel ride, it's a beautiful spot to photograph.

No matter what time of year you visit, there will be something going on.

Throughout the year, a variety of festivals and other events take place in Missoula, Montana.

You're also never very far from a hiking trail when you're in Missoula, but you could always opt for paddleboard yoga on the Clark Fork River.
