"A River Runs Through It" may have been filmed in Livingston and Bozeman, but everyone knows the story was set in Missoula... and we can't think of a better way to describe our beloved Zootown. With the Clark Fork cascading right through the heart of downtown and an abundance of recreational opportunities in the area, it's easy to see why Missoula is such a nature lover's paradise.
The Clark Fork River is the lifeblood of Missoula.
The Clark Fork flows almost 350 miles to the Idaho border. In fact, if you're driving around Western Montana, you'll probably lose track of how many times you'll cross it.
Having a river right in the middle of town means you don't even have to leave the city to enjoy nature at its finest.
On any given day when the weather is warm, you'll see people tubing, kayaking, and surfing Brennan's Wave, a manmade wave that provides locals with an urban whitewater experience.
The seven-mile Riverfront Trail takes you right through the heart of town on foot or by bike...
...and you definitely don't have to leave the city to explore some of the area's finest trails.
From the iconic M Trail to the Maclay Flat Nature Trail, you'll have plenty of options for getting some outdoor exercise.
Fly fishing is a top Montana pastime, and for Zootown locals, it's a way of life.
For some, fly fishing is as easy as stepping outside and walking a few blocks.
Being surrounded by rivers, mountains, and rolling hills makes for an incredibly scenic backdrop.
And, thanks to the outdoor music venues like the Big Sky Brewing Amphitheater and the new Kettlehouse Amphitheater, Missoula's music scene is booming. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy entertainment and nature at the same time.
Life in Missoula means experiencing all four seasons to the fullest.
From the first hints of spring to the powdery white winters, life in Zootown is a true treat.
With its stunning backdrops, river views, and scenic trails, it's no wonder Missoula residents are some of the happiest Montanans. These charming towns in the Treasure State are also surrounded by stunning scenery.
