9 Things That Will Always Make Idaho Natives Think of Home
Nine things that remind Idahoans of their home state, highlighting its natural beauty and unique features.
There is nothing greater than living in Idaho. As Idahoans, we are proud of the Gem State and are blessed to call it home. Even when we travel, there are certain things that remind us of home. We’ve put together a list of just nine things that will always make Idahoans think of our great state and how lucky we are to live here.
1. Scenic Roads
Idaho is home to the best backroads. Whether you are traveling a historic route, scenic byway, or a simple country road, you are in for a journey filled with natural beauty. Along the way, you'll find plenty of charming small towns well worth a detour.
2. Alpine Lakes
There are more than 3,700 alpine lakes around the Gem State. While some of these are quite small, others are blue, vibrant, and breathtaking. One of our favorite ways to escape the crowds and spend some time outdoors is on a hike to an alpine lake — there’s really nothing like it.
3. Cozy Cabins
The best place to get away in Idaho? A cozy cabin. Whether you are in a cabin next to the lake, in the mountains, or even on a private ranch, cozy cabins bring peace, relaxation, and lots of memories.
4. Beautiful Farmland

Idaho is home to nearly 25,000 farms, and its ideal climate makes agriculture one of the state’s most important industries. According to the Idaho State Department of Agriculture, farming accounts for about 20% of Idaho’s gross state product each year. The state’s food and beverage processing industry is valued at $26 billion, and Idaho produces more than 185 different commodities — with dairy and potatoes leading the way.
5. Unpredictable Weather
The weather can quickly change from snowy frosty mornings to warm to sun-baked afternoons. These dramatic shifts give Idahoans a sense of place few other climates can match. While the unpredictable weather may not be our favorite part about living in Idaho, it sure reminds us of home when we are away.
6. Lush Forests
From Island Park all the way to the panhandle, you will journey through thick, green, lush forests. Believe or not, we have a temperate rainforest! Idaho is a great way to surround yourself with some of Mother Nature's greatest creations.
7. French Fries
It's no secret that we love our potatoes in Idaho, and this love will carry with us no matter where we go. While many states offer excellent French fries, there is just something special about hand-cut fries using Idaho potatoes. I mean, there's a reason our potatoes are billion-dollar industry.
8. Charming Small Towns
Small towns are the heart and soul of Idaho. From their delightful downtown areas to their many hidden gems, the small towns in Idaho are some of the best. Be sure to add these stops to your next trip using the Only in Your State Itinerary Planner!
9. Friendly Folk
While you can find friendly people across the country, in Idaho it feels like kindness is simply part of who we are. Drive down a country road and you’ll notice how many people wave, even if they’ve never met you. That welcoming, easygoing spirit is a big part of what makes the Gem State truly feel like home.
