The St. Augustine Lighthouse stands proud with the iconic swirling black and white colors as a beacon for the sea. Located in one of the oldest cities in America, the current lighthouse has served for over a century, but something darker looms in its ominous tall shadow. When the sun sets, this location is prone to the wanderings of those who have perished but never left. 

The hauntings start off innocently enough, but will soon delve into darker territory the longer you linger. Many have reported smelling the distinct smell of a burning cigar while at the lighthouse. The property has been made smoke-free, but the unmistakable aroma has stayed. One of the previous keepers, Peter Rasmussen, had an affinity for cigars, and it’s believed he still hangs around in the shadows, lighting up a new one for the night. Yikes!

But the tales don't end there. Rumors of a man walking around in the shadows at night only to vanish into thin air are enough to send chills down your spine. This ghost that wanders around the lighthouse could very well be the lost soul of a previous keeper named Joseph Andreu. He often is found near the top of the lighthouse looking out, which, over a century ago, is where he took his last gasping breath as he fell while painting the structure. 

Perhaps the most eerie and well-known ghosts are those of two deceased little girls. In the late 1800s, during the construction of the lighthouse, you can see today the daughters of the superintendent of the construction playing on the site. The girls would ride the railway cart meant for supplies down by the water. One day, the railing that was meant to stop the cart was not there, and the sisters plunged into a watery grave. As tragic as this tale is, it only adds to the haunting appeal of the lighthouse.

Witnesses have reported seeing Victorian-era little girls playfully spooking guests. Strange giggles can be heard on the stairs, only to find no one is there. One woman wanted to comment on how well-behaved another woman's daughter was during a tour, only to find out there were no children present on the tour that day. Others have reported creepy things like items missing that showed up later, overturned chairs, and closed doors left open. From little girls’ footprints on the ground to games of hide and seek with paranormal investigators, there are plenty of stories that suggest these girls never left the lighthouse.
