The Story Behind Florida’s Most Haunted House Is Beyond Terrifying

About an hour north of Tampa, on the Nature Coast, sits a rural town called Brooksville. The town's many historic buildings line the streets, but one local home, in particular, has caught the attention of paranormal researchers across the country, earning it a reputation as one of the most haunted places in Florida.

The May-Stringer House is a stately Victorian home that was built in 1856 by John May.

It seems like this is where the problems began. John May died only two years after the May family moved into the home.

A decade later, his wife, Marena, died giving birth to the daughter she conceived with her new husband, a Confederate soldier named Frank Saxon.

Their daughter, Jessie May, died soon after at only three years old. Jessie May is said to be the prominent spirit inhabiting the home, calling for her mother and keeping a careful watch on her dolls that still reside in the home.

The May family, and later others, were buried on the property, only adding to its haunting reputation.

Eventually, the home was sold to Dr. Sheldon Stringer, who used one of the rooms for his medical practice.

It's rumored that up to eight different ghosts inhabit the house, including a malevolent spirit that occupies the attic and despises women, in particular.

This haunted mansion in Florida is now a museum. It's also one of the most haunted places in Florida, as there are plenty of stories from staff and volunteers about strange activity.
