People Live Their Whole Lives in Alabama and Somehow Miss These 5 Places
From a hidden waterfall to a unique bison farm, and more, these bucket-list-worthy places in Alabama might surprise you - even locals miss them.
It may be surprising to learn about the many popular attractions in Alabama that some folks have never heard of. Or they have lived in Alabama all their lives but never visited. I quite enjoyed the Harriott II, the riverboat cruise along the canal in downtown Montgomery. But when I took the scenic boat ride, I met a lot of out-of-towners who were there just for the weekend.
It’s common for locals to stay clear of these touristy attractions in Alabama. Let’s be honest, we have all done it for one reason or another. Whether it’s because these places are overcrowded, or they lack authentic flavor, or simply because folks have never heard of them. But I believe some hidden gems are worth the time and absolutely deserve a second look. Check out my picks for must-visit places in Alabama that will make you fall in love with “sweet home” again.
1. Caney Creek Falls, Double Springs

It’s going to take a little bit of effort to get to Caney Creek Falls. The trail is located on private property that requires a fee. You’ll need to drive along an unpaved road and hike a one-mile moderate trail to get to this hidden gem. Plus, expect strict rules and guidelines requiring hikers to stay on the designated trail.
Between the fee, the hike, and the restrictions, it makes sense why this stunning waterfall is not on folks’ radars. However, if you are willing to overlook these minor details, arguably the prettiest waterfall in Alabama is waiting for you. Since it’s nestled inside the Bankhead National Forest, the 20-foot waterfall is surrounded by serene woodlands. When you visit, you’ll feel like you’ve uncovered your own slice of heaven right here in Alabama. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down and exhale peacefully.
2. Landmark Park, Dothan

On my way to Montgomery, I have driven through Dothan many times. My only stops? A roadside fruit stand or a random gas station. My only regret? Missing the chance to visit Landmark Park, one of the most underrated attractions in Alabama. Surprisingly, not many people know about this living museum hiding in plain sight. Set on 135 acres, the park features historical sites, a working farm, hiking trails, picnic areas, an old-fashioned soda fountain, and a planetarium. Although it’s popular for school field trips, I could see families spending an entire day here and enjoying all the fun things to do. As for me? The next time I am driving through Dothan, this historical park is on my list of stops.
3. Eufaula, Barbour County
It’s unfortunate that so many locals and visitors overlook the historic side of Eufaula. While it’s a popular destination for fishing tournaments, this riverside gem is free of large crowds and social media influencers, but that only adds to its charm. The delightful town feels timeless with streets lined with grand Victorian-style and antebellum mansions. If you’re a history buff, the stunning architecture beckons you to stop and marvel at its intricate beauty.
Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will feel at home here, too. Aside from the tranquil waterways, expect parks and wildlife sanctuaries with hiking trails and wildlife viewing. Foodies, you’re in for a treat! With restaurants like Thelma's Kitchen and Barb's Country Kitchen, you’re guaranteed to have down-home cooking that will comfort your soul. This charming town in Alabama left me with lasting memories, and chances are, after you visit, you will realize how special it is.
4. Rickwood Field, Birmingham

Full disclosure: I am not a baseball fan, and I have only been to a handful of baseball games in my life. However, when the oldest ballpark in America is right here in Alabama, I think it deserves our attention. Built in 1910, this relic is a reminder of an era when segregation shaped our culture. Fortunately, baseball helped to shatter those social realities. Today, this historical stadium serves as a symbol of pride more than a place for daily events. Folks can tour the facility and visit the museum to learn about Alabama’s supporting role in baseball’s racial history.
5. Bama Bison RV Park & Farm, Opelika

Would it shock you to hear that there is a bison farm in Alabama where you can camp? Sure, this veteran-owned farm has only been around for a little over 10 years, but very few people know about it. Staying at this peaceful destination, watching the massive bison and their adorable calves roam in the pastures, is truly a one-of-a-kind experience in Alabama. As a working farm, expect to see and possibly interact with the resident barnyard animals. If you have little ones, this would be an extra treat for them. This is the kind of place where you can create new memories with the entire family, including your fur babies.
