The Caney Creek Falls Trail Is One Of The Best Waterfall Hikes In Alabama
Cool waters and lush landscapes make the Caney Creek Falls Trail in Bankhead National Forest one of the best waterfall hikes in Alabama. This hike is an easy, 1.7-mile out-and-back trail that will take you through a beautiful forest of showy wildflowers amid vivid greenery. While it's lovely in all seasons, many folks prefer it in late spring and summer for taking a dip in the swimming hole. If you know Alabama humidity, you'll instantly understand!
To reach the trailhead, navigate to the Caney Creek Falls Trail Parking Lot, located off of County Road 2 near Double Springs, Alabama. A gravel road leads to a parking area by a private home near the trailhead. This trail is located on private property, so plan ahead to tip at the kiosk ($20 per car recommended).
Not long after you start out on the trail you will descend to the creek.
As you follow the creek, you'll eventually come across Upper Caney Creek Falls.
Feel the refreshing spray of its 20-foot drop into an inviting swimming hole.
Waterfall hikes seem superior to other hikes, don't they? I haven't yet pinned down exactly why that is. Maybe it's the thrill of discovery, even when you already know it's there. You can even be a regular and have a different experience or perspective when viewing a waterfall depending on flow levels, time of day, and season.
Like anything in nature, your own state of mind and company can change what you see, too. Even so, there's something about the fact waterfalls have their own defiant dynamics regardless of what you see – or whether you're even there. String up your hammock and take some time to bask in the beauty of the falls.
Or take a long, cool dip before continuing on to Lower Caney Creek Falls.
When planning your trip, prepare a daypack filled with essentials such as water, snacks, sunscreen, and bug repellent. Comfortable hiking shoes and layered clothing are also recommended for a comfortable experience on the trail. And of course, wear a suit and consider water shoes if you plan to swim.
Also, bringing Fido is just fine as long as your pup is well-behaved, socially adjusted, and on a leash at all times.
We think you'll agree the Caney Creek Falls Trail is a must for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. With its easy accessibility, pretty forest setting, and welcomed cool waterfall breezes (especially in the summer!), It's one of the best waterfall hikes in Alabama and one you won't forget.
