5 Alabama Tourist Spots I Tried to Hate (But Ended Up Loving)

From beaches to battleships, these 5 must-see attractions in Alabama are worth the hype.

The most popular destinations in Alabama are popular for a reason. I’m not a fan of the term tourist trap, as I think it implies that these must-see attractions aren’t worth visiting. Yes, the major destinations will be popular, but if you want to avoid crowds, there are plenty of ways to outsmart them. Try visiting one of these must-see attractions in Alabama during the off-season, or visit them early in the mornings.

Talladega Superspeedway

Shake and bake, Ricky Bobby! Watching a race at the Talladega Superspeedway is a thrilling experience you will never forget. Built in 1969, the Talladega Superspeedway is NASCAR’s biggest track, and I’d highly recommend taking a tour. During the 45-minute tour, you’ll get to view the entire track from the Tower Extension, explore the Talladega Garage Experience, take photos in the victory lane, and learn all about the history of the track. NASCAR also offers a racing experience that allows YOU to get behind the wheel and drive on the Talladega Superspeedway yourself! Fans can also camp at Talladega, which is perhaps one of the most unique experiences of them all.

Of course, visiting Talladega (the town) is always a good idea, even if there isn’t a race on the calendar.

Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

alt

Since they’re so close to each other, I’m putting Gulf Shores and Orange Beach in the same category. Now, I grew up in New Orleans, so I’ve spent many a spring break on Alabama’s shores (and the Gulf Coast in general). For folks who grew up within driving distance of the Gulf Coast, you’ll know there's a sibling rivalry between Florida’s beaches and Alabama’s beaches (ok fine, we can add Mississippi’s beaches to the rivalry, too). While Destin may get my personal gold medal for best beach, I’ve too many memories surrounding Gulf Shores and Orange Beach to give them any hate.

Tuscaloosa

As an LSU alum, visiting Tuscaloosa felt like entering enemy territory. Despite the deep SEC rivalry, I found Tuscaloosa to be a very charming city. From the Alabama Museum of Natural History to the historic homes and unique architecture in downtown Tuscaloosa, there’s always something to do. There are also plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, including the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk, Lake Tuscaloosa, and Capitol Park. Across the river, Lake Lurleen State Park’s 23-mile trail system offers the perfect opportunity to get your steps in away from the hustle and bustle of the city. And I hate to say it, but ‘Bama does have a beautiful campus, and it’s worth your while to spend some time strolling around. Geaux Tigers, though.

Cathedral Caverns State Park

alt

You’ll find Cathedral Caverns State Park about 30 miles southeast of Huntsville. Easily one of my favorite must-see attractions in Alabama, Cathedral Caverns (formally known as Bat Cave) opened to the public in the 1950s. It was purchased by the state in 1987 and opened as a state park in 2000. The massive entrance clocks in at a staggering 126 feet wide and 25 feet high, which is why it was renamed to Cathedral Caverns. If you take a tour of the cave, be sure to dress warmly as the inside of the cave maintains a constant temperature of 60 degrees year-round. After you tour Cathedral Caverns, try your hand at gemstone mining! You can purchase a bucket of mining dirt and head over to the custom-made flumes to sift for any treasures.

USS ALABAMA

alt

Built in the 1940s during World War II, the USS ALABAMA is without a doubt a must-see attraction in Alabama. Visitors who explore the Battleship Memorial Park not only get to climb aboard the USS ALABAMA, but also the Submarine USS DRUM, the oldest American submarine on public display. Several tanks, boats, planes, memorials, and artillery pieces are scattered throughout the park, offering a chance to learn about the history of the collection, which spans World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Wars. Whether you’re a history buff, an aviation enthusiast, or a nauticalophile, everyone needs to pay a visit to this must-see attraction in Alabama.
