Today, those who visit Alabama are usually coming through Birmingham, the Yellowhammer State's largest city and its heart of culture and cuisine. However, many people don't even know that, less than an hour south of that modern metropolis, there's a quirky town in Alabama that has to be seen to be believed. Welcome to Montevallo, a college town of just over 7,000 people. Being a former university lad myself, I know very well that where college towns come, quirky and offbeat destinations soon follow. Montevallo doesn't just follow suit; it exceeds most that I've been to.

Home to the University of Montevallo, a private liberal arts university, the town has become a unique combination of its full-time southern residents and its temporary student residents, combining the old and the new in a unique fashion. Old-school architecture lines the street, but Main Street features new and exciting businesses. On the outskirts, natural beauty reigns, but in the city limits, that same natural beauty has been transformed into one of the most bizarre art displays in the South. Montevallo is a unique Alabama town that has to be seen to be believed.

What It's Like to Visit Montevallo

Montevallo is one of those towns that wins you over as soon as you arrive. While it's not all that far from Birmingham, central Alabama tends to be a sleepier place. During the school year, the town will be more crowded, but it never quite loses that small-town charm that defines it. The locals can usually be found at the Main Street Tavern, an acclaimed spot for burgers and beer.

The Quirky Attractions That Define This Town

Heading outside the city center, one of the area's most popular attractions is American Village. A unique collection of museums and natural beauty, the area is famous for its tulip fields every spring. The family-friendly area is also home to the P. Randall Miniature Museum, where dioramas of all of US history can be seen on display in painstaking detail.

Montevallo's natural beauty attracts a lot of hikers, and they can usually be found at Falling Rock Falls, an easy waterfall trail leading to a beautiful cascade in the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Center. However, the town's bizarre pride and joy has to be the Tinglewood Trail in Orr Park, where the trees have been transformed into unique wood carvings by artist Tim Tingle — some whimsical, some enchanting, some downright spooky.

Why It's Still Flying Under the Radar

Central Alabama isn't much of a tourist destination yet, so it's no surprise that this charming southern town is still flying under the radar. Most of its attractions are the kind that don't pull people from across the country, but absolutely enchant everyone who encounters them. That makes this town likely to remain a hidden gem — which is just fine with those who get to enjoy it exactly as it is.

Have you gotten to visit Montevallo? If not, this quirky town in Alabama is waiting for more visitors. You can see more information about the attractions and restaurants that define this small town on the official Montevallo city website. If you're looking for another unique Alabama destination, head to the northwest corner of the state to explore Tuscumbia, the birthplace of Helen Keller.
