Skip the Hikes and Try This Alabama Paddle Trail Instead

One of the best ways to enjoy the summertime is to grab a paddle and check out one of the many kayak trails in Alabama. Where This Trail Is and What Makes It Unique

Terrapin Creek in Eastern Alabama is a freshwater stream flowing from the Talladega National Forest through Cleburne and Cherokee Counties. Since the water is fairly calm, it’s one of the best kayaking spots in Alabama. There are some mild rapids along the paddle trail, but it’s the perfect place for beginners to practice paddling through moving water. 

In addition to swimming, fishing is a popular pastime along these waters, and many think it’s one of the best places to fish in Alabama. Trout and bass are the main fish that anglers are after.

The Terrapin Creek Paddle Trail is a roughly seven or eight-mile route that’s beginner-friendly and takes you on a beautiful aquatic adventure. You can do this route on your own, but if you don’t have multiple cars to leave at the drop-in and take-out zones, coordinating can be a hassle. One of the reasons I love paddle trails so much is that you’re surrounded by nature. It’s just you and the sounds of water and songbirds. As you navigate through the water, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife—there’s always something! From turtles sunbathing to sneaky snakes lounging on tree branches, everyone loves a day on the water. You might even spot some bass cruising through the water, too!

Depending on the time of your trip, you might see an abundance of wildflowers along the banks of the water. Along the way, you’ll see several red gravel sandbanks amidst the lush wooded banks. Those spots are ideal for pulling up and having lunch while you stretch your legs.

Tips for Visiting

Terrapin Outdoor Center has been in the game for decades, and their number one priority is your safety. That means knowing when to float, and when not to. They will not offer any rentals if the water flow is greater than 500cfs, there’s muddy water, poor weather conditions, or temperatures below 70 degrees. 

Life jackets are provided with your kayak rental, but if you’re bringing your own kayak, you should also bring a life jacket. Water shoes, a hat, and sunglasses are all important creature comforts for spending long hours out on the water. 

Other necessary items include bottled water, snacks, sunscreen, and a dry pouch to keep electronics and keys safe while you paddle. The kayaks have enough space for you to put a small cooler in, so you can keep your drinks and snacks nice and cold. As always, remember: no glass on the water and leave no trace!
