You’ll Fall In Love With The Tiny Waterfall Hiding Along This Breathtaking Alabama Trail
I just love the anticipation of a cool, sparkling waterfall while on woodsy, summer strolls in the South. Let's face it, it's gorgeous out and yet often oh-so-hot. That rushing sound and refreshing spray are just enough to make it all better. Falling Rock Falls is a hidden waterfall in Montevallo, Alabama that you'll visit time and again. Here's a peek at what to expect when you set out to explore it yourself.
The waterfall is tucked away in the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area. To reach it, park your car near the gated entrance and set out on foot. The trail is well-marked, so there's no need to worry about getting lost. About a quarter mile up the road, it forks, where you take a left and then the next right. Within about 100 yards, you'll see the dirt trail to the falls.
The trail is a total of 1.83 miles out and back with an elevation gain of 243 feet. There are a few lofty overlooks for beautiful views of the lush tree canopy.
As you might expect, you'll hear the falls before you see them, and they're lovely when you do. Take in the 90-foot cascade and carefully make your way over and under the falls for different views and perspectives.
And, of course, the welcomed sensation of cool water mist on your skin on a sunny summer day.
Pups are allowed to join in the fun, as long as they are leashed. Another thing to know is the trail is moderate, so while most folks can handle it, you should wear appropriate footwear for the sometimes-rocky terrain.
Speaking of which, the dirt trail takes you to the top of the falls initially. If you keep walking across the stream, the trail continues to where you'll see several little side trails to get down to the base of the falls. Be careful on those, but give it a shot if you can. It's worth it to reach the bottom and relax by the base pool before your return trek.
