There’s A Magical Trolley Ride In New Jersey That Most People Don’t Know About
New Jersey is a transportation hub and trolleys and trams were once a very popular way to get around. Electric streetcar lines could be found all over cities like Newark and New Brunswick; there was even an elevated railway running from the Hoboken Terminal up through the Palisades and into Jersey City. While these trolleys are primarily a thing of the past, the Great American Trolley Car Company is bringing them to life once again.
The Great American Trolley Company offers Victorian-style transportation to shore area passengers.
You may recognize their iconic trolleys as they offer loop service in shore towns including Wildwood, Ocean City and Cape May. According to the Wildwood Tourism Board, their trolleys are operated by Five Mile Beach Electric Railway Company (a division of the Great American Trolley Company), the oldest continuously operating trolley company in the United States. Catching a trolley is easy - they have designated routes with maps available online. Driver phone numbers are even available so you can find out exactly where they are along their route.
While these trolleys may have a vintage look and feel, they have modern amenities.
In addition to the beautiful brass railings and handcrafted oak or cloth padded seating, you'll find amenities like oversized windows, CD players, public address equipment, air conditioning and heating. All trolleys are ADA compliant. Another perk? Rides are cheap, with round-trip fares often costing $5 or less. Relax and let someone else deal with the shore traffic.
These trolleys aren't just for local transportation, they also offer tours!
Tours are available from June to September (or later) and there are a variety to choose from. There's a tour for everyone! Along the way, you’ll be treated to stories about Rumrunners, Bootleggers, Shipwrecks, The Grave Yard Inlet, Widows Walk and more!
