Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking for a way to spend some time outdoors soaking up beautiful views, Lion’s Den Trail won’t disappoint. Like something straight from a fairy tale, it's easily the most enchanting hike in Wisconsin. It winds through a lush forest before meandering down into a gorge. And while the scenery along the way is stunning on its own, the views of Lake Michigan at the end of the hike are out of this world.
Located in Grafton, Lion’s Den Nature Preserve features plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun accompanied by tremendous views.
Dubbed an "ecological jewel," the 73-acre park has a little bit of everything – woodlands, lake bluffs, a gorge, and wetlands. It's truly one of the most beautiful places in Wisconsin.
Luckily, there are several trails that make it easy to explore the area.
One of the most popular trails is Lion’s Den Trail. The 3-mile loop trail is short, mostly flat, and scenic, making it a great choice for hikers of all ages and skill levels. It’s even dog-friendly (as long as the dog’s on a leash).
The trek begins with a boardwalk leading straight through a forested marsh area. Depending on the time of year, the boardwalk may be lined with colorful wildflowers.
The magical journey continues, leading you across a bridge...
...to Gorge Vista, where you can take in exceptional views.
As you continue along the trail, you’ll eventually come to a set of stairs, which descends down into the gorge.
At the bottom of the gorge you’ll cross a pristine stream, only adding to the scenic beauty of the area.
From the gorge, the trek traverses another bridge, leading to the beach on Lake Michigan.
Many trails can be accessed from Lion’s Den Trail, so you can easily extend your time at the preserve.
Bluff Trail, which meanders through forests and flowery meadows, is just one of the other hikes you’ll find at the preserve.
