This Scenic Wisconsin Hike Is Even Better in the Winter With Friends

Itching to try a winter hike in Wisconsin? Explore the 4.2-mile Devil's Lake Loop via the East Bluff and Tumbled Rock Trails in Devil's Lake State Park.

As an avid skier, I’ve spent a lot of time in Wisconsin at Devil’s Head Resort. However, when I’m not hitting the slopes with my pals, there are plenty of other opportunities to get outside and enjoy the winter season. One such way is to gather my friends and tackle the Devil's Lake Loop via the East Bluff and Tumbled Rock Trails. Only about 15 minutes away from the popular ski resort, this moderately challenging trail is a great option for breathing in the fresh winter air while still giving yourself a bit of a physical challenge on your off day from skiing.

This 4.2-mile trail takes winter hikers around the entirety of the more than 360-acre Devil’s Lake. With just shy of a 550 elevation gain, this trek can offer a doable yet still rewarding accomplishment upon completion. That said, much of the trail around the lake is on a flat, paved walkway. Depending on where you begin the loop within Devil's Lake State Park, you’ll eventually trek through the forest and be surrounded by towering trees and impressive boulders. Seeing these giant rocks around the forest always awakens the kid in me who is excited to climb on things.

Along the way, adventurers will utilize parts of the South Shore Boardwalk. There is a section of the loop where you’ll be walking along a car-friendly road. Don’t let that spoil the fun for you; the rest of the winter hike is plenty out of the way of traffic.

However, it gets extra fun and interesting when it's time to scramble over rocks to reach the epic viewpoint. The rocks can be slippery in winter, so be sure to slow down and take your time. The trail is not maintained in the winter, so you want to have trekking poles and microspikes for handling the potentially icy conditions.

That said, the view of Devil’s Lake from the top is an absolute treat. All in all, the trail takes most hikers between 90 and 120 minutes to complete. If it's a particularly snowy day, be sure to come well-dressed for the weather and bring plenty of supplies, as conditions are likely to slow you down. As mentioned above, the trail is rated as moderate. However, many hikers have said they feel the trail could be rated challenging. Consider your skill level, come prepared, and always err on the side of caution.

Ultimately, the Devil's Lake Loop via the East Bluff and Tumbled Rock Trails offers a great physical challenge alongside epic views of the lake and the surrounding woods. Well worth the extra effort in winter, remember to plan ahead, dress for the weather, and pack your supplies well. Whether you're a regular hiker or looking to mix up the outdoor adventures of your nearby ski trip, this trail should be on your Badger State bucket list. Lace up your boots, hit the trail, and take in the beauty of Wisconsin’s great outdoors. Feeling inspired? Try planning your own Wisconsin trip using Only In Your State’s itinerary planner.
