Explore 9 stunning West Virginia waterfalls on one scenic road trip, from Sandstone Falls to Brush Creek Falls and hidden gems near Beckley.
It’s the perfect time of year to plan a trip to some of the best waterfalls in West Virginia. Now, there are over 200 waterfalls peppered throughout the state, and as much as I would love to send you on an epic adventure chasing them all down, it’s just not realistic. What is realistic is to pick a handful of West Virginia waterfalls that you can do as a day trip.
From start to finish, this waterfall road trip clocks in at 2.5 hours. Of course, you’re going to want to give yourself enough time to fully explore these waterfalls, so carve out the entire day for this one. You don’t want to feel rushed! Here’s a handy dandy map you can use to guide your way.
1. Mash Fork Falls (Camp Creek State Park)
The first of the waterfalls in West Virginia on this list is Mash Fork Falls. Standing about eight feet tall, it's hardly the tallest waterfall in West Virginia, but it sure is one of the prettiest. As you enter Camp Creek State Park, the road will split. Head left to reach Mash Fork Falls, one of the best waterfall hikes in West Virginia.
2. Campbell Falls (Camp Creek State Park)
...or if you decide to keep to the right, you'll reach Campbell Falls. Once there, you'll see signs for both of these beautiful waterfalls, which are located in Camp Creek State Park. Two waterfalls in one stop? Yes, please!
3. Brush Creek Falls (Brush Creek Nature Preserve)
This stunning waterfall in Athens, which is about an hour and 15 minutes southwest of the city of Lewisburg, is located within the Brush Creek Nature Preserve. Follow a level, wide trail for 1/4 mile to reach the massive Brush Creek Falls. A path a few steps beyond the fenced area leads down to the rocky bank at the base of the falls.
4. White Oak Creek Falls (Brush Creek Nature Preserve)
Also located in the Brush Creek Nature Preserve is the multi-tiered White Oak Creek Falls. It can be found another 1.5 miles past the Brush Creek Falls, and along the way, you'll see many smaller cascades. The water level in White Oak Creek Falls can fluctuate dramatically; sometimes, this falls looks like a roaring cascade from a tropical rainforest, but at other times it's a mere trickle.
5. Pipestem Falls (Route 20)
Situated near but not quite inside the Pipestem Resort State Park is Pipestem Falls. It's visible from the road (Route 20), but this waterfall in West Virginia is best seen in winter when the leaves are off the trees.
6. Bluestone Dam (Bluestone State Park)
This might be cheating, but we just had to include one manmade waterfall on the list. Located inside of Bluestone State Park in Hinton, the Bluestone Dam Spillway often forms a type of cascade, and is one of the most popular West Virginia waterfalls for fishermen!
7. Sandstone Falls (Hinton)
Also located in Hinton, the Sandstone Falls, one of the best waterfall hikes in West Virginia, spans the New River. Enjoy it from the Sandstone Falls Overlook or from several nearby trails. If you're up for some side quests, the New River Gorge National Park is full of them!
8. Glade Creek Falls (Beaver)
The Glade Creek Trail a 5.6-mile rail trail located outside of Beckley is where you'll find the Glade Creek Falls. These falls in West Virginia feature multiple cascades as you walk along Glade Creek. Now, this is certainly a stunner in the summer when everything is surrounded by those vibrant greens, but you should absolutely make a mental note to come back and see this waterfall in autumn when you can see all of the incredible fall foliage!
9. Kates Falls (Beaver)
Although it is short, but a bit steep, the 0.2-mile spur off of the Glade Creek Trail takes you to Kates Falls, one of the most beautiful falls in West Virginia. Check out the AllTrails map so you can see the route to both Glade Creek Falls and Kates Falls.
