Virginia is filled to the brim with unique natural attractions and activities just waiting for you to discover. For instance, did you realize that the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi River was located here in Virginia? And that hikers can climb right alongside it via a staircase trail? If you've yet to make your way to Crabtree Falls, now's the perfect time. Here's more on this magical waterfall staircase hike that may be the most unique in all of Virginia.
Please note: It is absolutely essential that hikers remain on the guided trail and do not attempt to climb beyond it, as rock conditions can become extremely slippery.
Crabtree Falls, the highest vertical-drop cascades east of the Mississippi River, can be found in Montebello, Virginia.
The first waterfall lookout is just a few hundred feet from the parking lot and can be accessed via a gentle and paved walkway.
This popular 3-mile hike showcases the falls along with a sweeping view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In fact, the hike is just 6 miles away from the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.
The most enticing aspect of the trail is that hikers are encouraged to climb alongside the falls on a designated staircase path.
While the climb to the top is a relatively short one, you'll get your money's worth in the cardio department as you continue to climb upward. Just be sure to stay on the trail, as wandering beyond the designated hiking area can prove to be dangerous.
Approaching the top, you'll feel utterly transfixed by the sheer volume of water flow. Depending on rainfall, you might even feel a few splashes of water.
Once you've arrived at the top of the falls, you'll want to take a few moments to enjoy the panoramic view of the Tye River Valley. From here, you can continue hiking or return to the bottom.
