Grab the Hand Warmers for this Hike In South Carolina that’s 100% Worth Braving the Cold

This trail offers a breath of fresh air in the winter, with fewer crowds, gorgeous views, and quality time in the most beautiful setting.

The mountains of South Carolina are a cherished destination come summertime. Yet we'd argue that winter here is just as magical, offering outdoor enthusiasts a chance to get outside without having to navigate the crowds. For proof of this, we're recommending one of our favorite cold-weather trails: Raven Rock Loop Trail. It's a fairly challenging hike to be sure but those who don't mind being out in the elements will find themselves surrounded by some of the most magnificent scenery in the Palmetto State. Plus, these handmade hand-warmers will ensure you hike in comfort (and style!)

If you ask us, Raven Rock Loop Trail is the perfect middle-of-winter hiking trail. It's long but not too long and it's challenging without being unbearable. The 4.3-mile loop requires about 900 feet of elevation gain, so you'll want to wear your sturdy hiking boots and bring water, even on a chilly day.

Visitors agree that this trail is the crown jewel of Keowee-Toxaway State Park. It features rocky outcrops, storybook stream crossings, wooded pathways, and, of course, absolutely stunning views of the lake.

The beginning of the trail is pretty easy; you'll cross over Poe Creek and have the chance to admire the natural granite bridge on the way. Next up is a steep uphill climb, eventually leading you to the top of the valley. Stick with it, though, because each step will bring you closer and closer to a stunning overlook.

After reaching the top, you'll reach the ridge portion of the trail until descending again to Lake Keowee. As you complete the loop back to the trailhead, you'll find a mix of climbs and descents, all the while enjoying beautiful views of the water.

In addition to the gorgeous views, there's another quality that stands out about this trail: it's never boring. You'll love the range of views, inclines, scenery, and landscapes that this trail offers, and on a chilly winter day, you can look forward to even higher visibility.
