Dream Spring Break in South Carolina: Where I’d Go if Money Was No Object

Embrace the best of spring in South Carolina with a trip to Cypress Gardens, teeming with both wildflowers and wildlife.

Spring in South Carolina is magical. The temperatures are warm but not too warm, the daylight lingers, and the magical sound of songbirds has finally returned to the Palmetto State. If you are looking for a way to celebrate springtime and enjoy all of these things, we'd recommend a visit to Cypress Gardens.

Located just north of Charleston in Berkeley County, this 170-acre preserve and garden is absolutely delightful this time of the year. At its center is an 80-acre blackwater and bald cypress swamp, which lends itself to a breathtaking variety of wildlife and blooms.

With so much to do, it's entirely possible to spend a whole day exploring Cypress Gardens. From butterfly exhibits to immersive gardens, wooded trails, and even swamp tours, there's something for everyone to enjoy here. This Lowcountry landscape was built by Benjamin Kittredge in 1909, but the site originally served as the rice fields of Dean Hall Plantation, which would not have existed without the labor of enslaved people. The old rice field embankments were rebuilt, flowers and trees were planted, and canals were dug through the swamp. By 1932, the gardens officially opened to the public.

One of the best ways to experience the property is by taking the Cypress Gardens Loop, an easy 2.4-mile circuit with stunning views of the swamp and its magnificent cypress trees. There are asphalt trails surrounding the swamp as well as lots of well-marked side trails to enjoy. Along the way, you'll find benches and even some swings for simply resting and taking in the surroundings.

One of the benefits of visiting in the spring is that everything is freshly in bloom. In March, visitors can look forward to the peak Azalea blossoms, along with violets, sweetleafs, jacks-in-the-pulpit, and blue toadflax. Things also start to get a lot noisier toward the end of the month, with cricket frogs beginning to sing.

Birding enthusiasts will want to keep their eyes out for yellow-throated warblers, red-shouldered hawks, purple martins, and more. You're also likely to spot some beautiful black swallowtail and monarch butterflies!

If you really want the full swamp experience, we'd recommend signing up for a swamp boat adventure. These unique guided boat tours are the best way to experience the swampy landscape and stunning gardens. These guided boat tours cost an additional $5, but there's also the option to take a self-guided boat tour free of charge (subject to availability). Gliding through the dark waters, you'll gain a newfound appreciation for the state's natural beauty.
