The 5.2-Mile Eastatoe Creek Heritage Preserve Trail Might Just Be The Most Enchanting Hike In South Carolina

If you love nature and enjoy scenic hikes with some little surprises along the way or on trails that have some personality, you're going to be in hiker heaven if you've never experienced the Eastatoe Heritage Preserve Trail. Or if you have, it will be a revisit to hiker heaven for you! And if it's been a while since you were there, you may be in for a surprise yourself. Come along as we take a peek at what may be the most enchanting hike in South Carolina.

At just over five miles and considered a moderate hike, this beautiful trail takes about two and a half hours on average to complete. It's sure to be a memorable experience.

After all, nature produces the absolute best artwork. Scenes like this leave me almost speechless.

The Eastatoe Creek Heritage Preserve trail is a branch of the 77-mile Foothills Trail and is one of many trails within the Eastatoe Creek Heritage Preserve.

The 373-acre preserve is part of the much larger Jocassee Gorges Wilderness area (of approximately 43,500 acres) and protects a five-mile stretch of the Eastatoe Creek.

Plan for longer than two and a half hours to allow time to stop and enjoy the soothing sounds of the creek, as well as the other delightful discoveries along this incredible hike.

Depending on the time of year you visit the trail, you could enjoy pops of color from delicate wildflowers along the way.

The Vasey’s Trillium, for example, is a perennial herb that blooms from April to May and is native to the southeastern United States, southern Appalachian Mountains.

And the Mountain Laurel blooms between May and June. Be careful with this one, as it's one of those beautiful plants that are also deadly. Children have been poisoned by just sucking on the flowers of the plant.

And what have we here? Why, it's an abandoned hiking boot that's being reclaimed by nature!

Any of you who have seen this boot while traveling along this trail may not have seen this guy who's been placed on the boot since the time the other photo was taken. Hello there, Mr. Gnome!

We don't know about you, but it sure is giving us those old woman living in a shoe nursery rhyme feels. But if you're not getting the fairytale vibes yet, let's keep going a bit further.

Ever get the feeling someone is watching you? Well, on this trail, someone is! It looks like Geoffrey Chaucer was right in The Canterbury Tales, "Fields have eyes and every wood has ears!"
