One of the things South Carolina is most known for is its beaches, and we do have some gorgeous beaches. But if you’ve never been to any of our other great nature spots, such as the Cypress Wetlands, one of the most magical places in South Carolina, you’re truly missing out. Take a peek and get ready for your next road trip!
The Cypress Wetlands Loop may just be the most enchanting hike in all of South Carolina, located in the town of Port Royal and part of the gorgeous Beaufort County lowcountry.
This region of the state is rich with moss-draped trees, and there are over 30 different types of common trees and plants right here in the Cypress Wetlands.
Across the surface of the water during the spring, summer, and into the fall season until temperatures get too cold (freezing and below), you'll see this beautiful opaque green hue, which comes from miniature floating native aquatic plants called duckweed, an important, healthy part of the ecosystem that produces oxygen and provides shade for the water in the summer and food and shelter for animals like turtles, frogs, and fish.
Walk across the boardwalk and through the sea of duckweed. The loop is less than a mile long and easy, suitable for all ages.
Also during the spring, you can enjoy beautiful blooms along the way.
The views are simply spectacular. Take your time to enjoy every moment of this experience.
This would be the type of view you could expect after the first freeze and before the duckweed has begun growing (possibly about November or December through April). You may want to time your visit accordingly depending on which type of view you'd like to see during your hike.
You could also expect to see many types of wildlife, including some alligators, especially during warmer months! Is it just us or does this guy look really happy about something, maybe even a little suspicious? Hmm!
This area is a birder's paradise. Commonly seen here are egrets, herons, marsh hens, and more.
Watching animals in their natural habitat is an interesting, peaceful type of experience.
Cypress Wetlands is definitely a picture-perfect place for experiencing an unforgettable sunset...
... with happily-ever-after vibes. What better way to end a day?
