The 3.5-Mile Hiking Trail in South Carolina That Is a Fall Foliage Wonderland

Boasting a well-maintained path, beautiful views, and stunning foliage, this trail has everything we love about autumn hiking in South Carolina.

One of the best parts about living in South Carolina is that hiking can be enjoyed year-round. There's no time of year that isn't fitting for quality time in nature, from the heart of summer to the dead of winter. Even still, we do have a favorite hiking season: autumn. The crisp air and shimmering leaves lend themselves perfectly to a top-notch hiking experience, and nowhere is that truer than Twin Ponds, a 3.5-mile trail near Landrum, South Carolina. Come with us as we journey to this South Carolina trail that transforms into a fall foliage wonderland.

The Blue Wall Preserve is made up of nearly 575 acres in the Blue Ridge Escarpment of the Southern Appalachians. It's ecologically significant for its relatively dramatic rise in elevation and abundant rainfall, and it's also absolutely stunning. The land was acquired by the Nature Conservancy in 1997 and has also been designated as an Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society. In fact, it's home to 114 different bird species! The name Blue Wall is also significant; it's an homage to the Cherokee name for the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can learn more about the important work of preserving the Blue Wall Preserve here.

One of the best ways to enjoy this stunning landscape is, of course, by hiking through it. Twin Ponds Loop is a 3.4-mile trek that will take you to some of the preserve's most breathtaking scenery. To start, you'll want to park at the Palmetto Trail Blue Wall Passage trailhead parking area. From there, you'll follow a gravel road to past two picturesque ponds. At the second pond, you'll complete the "lollipop" loop after seeing a small waterfall, and you'll return back along the same gravel road.

There's a lot to love about this trail: convenient parking, stunning water views, and a relatively flat, easy-to-navigate trail. In the late summer, visitors will enjoy lots of wildflowers and, in the fall, a stunning canopy of foliage. If you do hike in the autumn, be sure to look up at the beautiful reds, golds, and oranges that surround you.
