The Epic 4-Mile Trail in Table Rock State Park That’s Worth the Climb

This South Carolina trail has a fairly steep incline, but it will take you to some of the best views in Table Rock State Park.

For the most part, South Carolina hiking trails are relatively flat. The exception, of course, lies in the northwest region right on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Table Rock State Park is where you can get above the tree line and catch those mesmerizing overlooks, and that’s exactly where we are headed today. The Table Rock Trail is one of the most popular trails in the park, but we’re going to be exploring the path less traveled: the Pinnacle Mountain Trail. This four-mile trail is one that will push you to your limits, but your efforts will be rewarded with a truly spectacular view.

The Pinnacle Mountain Trail is four miles one way, so remember that a round-trip will add a little more than eight miles to the hike (plan accordingly). Before hitting the trail, ensure you have enough water and snacks. All hikers are required to register at the trailhead kiosk or Nature Center before hiking the trail. Hikers can fill out one card per group, and must be off trails before sunset (park gates lock each night).

There are a few different trails that cross the Pinnacle Mountain Trail. Follow the yellow blazes to stay on the trail. I always recommend using AllTrails while hiking, so you can make sure you’re always on the trail. Table Rock State Park also has a nice trail map of the entire park, so you can see how all of the trails weave in and out of each other.

The trail starts with several footbridges that cross over various creeks, and there’s even a little waterfall along the way. Depending on the time of year you visit, the trail could be illuminated with all of the beautiful rhododendrons that line the steep mountain slopes.

After the waterfall and rock ledge, you’ve got the option for a side quest! The 0.4-mile spur trail leads to Mill Creek Falls, which might be worth your while! No worries if that’s not on your agenda for the hike; you can always return another day to see more of the waterfalls in Table Rock State Park.

The trail boasts an elevation gain of 2,329 feet, and it gets pretty steep until you reach the Bald Knob Overlook. This is one of the best views in Table Rock State Park! If you have it in you, continue uphill to the summit of Pinnacle Mountain. You’ll also encounter the Foothills Trail just after Bald Knob, which is another side quest option.

Once you’ve reached the top of Pinnacle Mountain, you can return the way you came or take the Ridge Trail to the Table Rock Trail, which will get you back to the Nature Center. I like taking different trails up and down to minimize backtracking.
