Stroll Then Swim on This Beach Hike in South Carolina That’s Perfect for Summer
On the Hunting Island Loop in Hunting Island State Park, you can take a hike and then swim on a beautiful South Carolina beach this summer.
Whenever I go for a hike during the summer months, I prefer that a beach, lake, or river is involved. When I lived in South Carolina, one thing that was hard to get used to was the heat, coupled with high humidity, so I was always finding ways to cool off. On the Hunting Island Loop in Hunting Island State Park, you can take a hike and then swim at a beautiful South Carolina beach this summer. Are you ready for a hike and a swim? Let's go!
Hunting Island State Park is the most popular state park in South Carolina, seeing over a million people each year. Known for its coastal attributes, including a historic lighthouse and sandy beaches, it's certainly an enticing place to play outside, especially during summer. One trail that can take you on a journey through maritime forests and beaches is the Hunting Island Loop.
While the Hunting Island Loop's 8.6-mile length may seem daunting, it's rated as easy on AllTrails. Also, you don't have to hike it in its entirety — do what you can and turn back at any point. There will be plenty of swimming opportunities along the way.
Before you leave your house for this state park set on a barrier island, make sure you pack everything you'll need for both hiking and swimming. Start with hiking boots, sunscreen, a sun hat, swimsuit, a towel, and plenty of water to keep you hydrated throughout your hike and at the beach. Once you're all packed with swimming and hiking gear, head to the park and start your journey at the Hunting Island Lighthouse.
As you walk, notice the coastal landscape around you — the maritime forests and marshes are beautiful and attract plenty of birds. The views are outstanding, and the wildlife is abundant. If you need to rest along the way, you can find benches here and there along the trail.
And then there's the sandy beach and the Atlantic Ocean beckoning you to come in for a dip. Feel free to stop at the beach at any time to take a dip. Ocean swimming is allowed at Hunting Island State Park, but keep in mind that there is no designated swimming area, no lifeguards, and swimming is at your own risk.
Certain parts of the beach may be crowded when you're here, especially on an incredibly hot day. As mentioned before, this is a very popular state park, but it's one you will want to visit this summer.
