If you’re not from Wallingford or haven’t explored Widener University, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve not yet been introduced to Taylor Memorial Arboretum. It’s so well-hidden, in fact, that some locals only accidentally discover its existence.

Considered a hidden gem by those in the know, the 30-acre arboretum welcomes visitors for free and promises the opportunity to spend time in the quiet of nature.

Maintained by Widener University since 2016, the arboretum sits along Ridley Creek and features a variety of natural features, including meadows and woods.

The best way to soak up the natural beauty of the area is to set off on one of the arboretum’s trails. Stop to smell the azaleas, rhododendrons, and other perennials.

Home to a variety of local wildlife, the natural area also features unique rock outcrops.

Visitors are asked to follow a few rules to help protect the grounds of the arboretum. Pets are allowed, for example, but must remain on a leash.

While hiking through the arboretum is permitted, you cannot picnic, swim, jog, or participate in any recreational activities. The natural space is designed to provide a tranquil retreat for visitors.

Taylor Memorial Arboretum welcomes visitors daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, it is closed on major holidays, so keep that in mind when planning your visit.
