Pennsylvania’s Winter Forecast Is in (And It’s Not What You’d Expect)

The Farmer's Almanac winter forecast for Pennsylvania 2025-2026 hints at a "mostly mild—with pockets of wild" season.

While we’re used to experiencing all four seasons in a day, we all know the best way to survive winter in Pennsylvania is to expect the unexpected. We might wake up to a balmy morning that tricks us into thinking spring has arrived, only to get a few inches of snow by evening. Knowing what to expect is the best way to prepare for winter in Pennsylvania. The Farmer's Almanac Winter Forecast for Pennsylvania for 2025-26 has been released, and it looks like Pennsylvania’s in for "mostly mild—with pockets of wild!"

The winter weather you'll experience this upcoming season largely depends on where in the state you live. According to the Farmer's Almanac, most of Pennsylvania falls in the "Appalachians" range, which will see colder-than-usual temperatures, light snowfall in the northern part of the state, and more snowfall in southern Pennsylvania. This region's coldest periods will occur in mid and late December, early and late January, and early February.

That leaves Western Pennsylvania, which falls in the Ohio Valley. This region of the state can expect chillier-than-normal temperatures with a fair amount of snowfall. The Farmer's Almanac winter forecast for Western Pennsylvania predicts the coldest part of winter will take place in mid-to late December, early January, and late January into early February, with one last bout of freezing weather in mid-March.

To simplify: expect it all. There will likely be milder days, but we won't escape the cold or snow this year. Before winter's arrival is the best time to prepare for what lies ahead. You might want to start a to-do list and include stocking up on salt for icy mornings, adding weather stripping to your windows, having your furnace checked, and putting snow tires on your vehicle. Have an emergency kit in your car with what you'll need—a first aid kit, blankets and extra clothing, an ice scraper, and phone chargers—in case you break down or find yourself stranded. Water and snacks are a good idea, too.

The Farmer's Almanac winter forecast for Pennsylvania shows that each part of the state will have at least some snow this winter. Take advantage of those snowy days by getting outdoors and having fun. We have plenty of winter activities in Pennsylvania from which to choose, too. Spend a day sled riding down your favorite hill; ice skate at your favorite state park in Pennsylvania, or zip down a mountain on a snow tube. Or, if you're like me, curl up under a warm blanket, hopefully watching the snowfall. Unfortunately, the Pittsburgh area has had plenty of freezing days the past few winters, but not much snow.

If you're not a fan of the cold, you might start counting down until spring, with fingers crossed that Phil doesn't see his shadow, right after the holidays. The good news is we'll bid farewell to the bitter cold weather, no matter where we live in the state, by the end of March.
