The Clearest Lake in Ohio, Nelson Ledges Quarry, Is Almost Too Beautiful to Be Real

Nelson Ledges Quarry Park is a beautiful oasis and the ultimate waterfront destination.

Here in Ohio, we’re downright spoiled when it comes to beautiful water scenery. Lake Erie provides countless opportunities for adventure and scenery, while the Ohio and Cuyahoga Rivers are rich with history and picturesque settings. If, however, you’re looking for a waterfront destination in Ohio where you can often escape from the crowds you'll find at more popular beaches in the Buckeye State, we’ve got just the place in mind.

Nelson Ledges Quarry Park is a hidden gem with some of the most beautiful water we’ve ever seen. So, whether you’re looking for an outdoor adventure or simply a place to relax, you’ll be glad to have discovered this beautiful spot, one of the best lakes in Ohio for swimming.

Nothing says summer like a day spent on the water, and Nelson Ledges Quarry does not disappoint. The moment you arrive at this family-friendly destination in Portage County, you know you're in for an unforgettable day. The quarry is spring-fed, meaning the water is crystal clear and always wonderfully refreshing. If the outside temperature is above 70°F and sunny, the quarry is an excellent swimming spot.

Even if you're not swimming or floating in the water, the lake provides a stunning backdrop for a myriad of other outdoor activities, including camping, snorkeling, hiking, picnicking, and many others. One thing's for sure—you won't want to forget to bring your camera with you.

The park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and sunset is one of my favorite times of day at the quarry. At dusk, as the sun descends below the horizon, watch in awe as the water reflects the beautiful colors of the sky. So, whether you're an avid swimmer, hiker, or nature enthusiast, you'll agree that this park is a little slice of paradise tucked away in Ohio.

While you're in the area, be sure to spend some time exploring the adjacent Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park, which I think is one of the most underappreciated parks in Ohio. Yet, it is home to some of the most fascinating rock formations in the Buckeye State and waterfalls like Minnehaha Falls, as well as a large campground, which is the perfect place to stay after spending a day at the quarry or on the trail.

If you're looking for a little more in the way of creature comforts than you might find in a campground, no need to worry. The Hiram Inn is a boutique hotel that boasts 12 rooms and offers breakfast to its guests. It's just minutes from the two parks in the nearby community of Hiram.

Be sure to add the Nelson Ledges Quarry to your bucket list this summer. For more information about planning your visit, be sure to check out the Nelson Ledges Quarry Park website. If you're looking for more aquatic adventures, check out our list of the best swimming holes in Ohio.
