The Best Smash Burger in Ohio Is at This Tiny Local Spot You’ve Never Heard Of

This tiny local restaurant serves the best smash burger in Ohio, with crispy edges and incredible flavor.

I consider myself to be a burger expert, y'all. So, when I say I'm looking for the best smash burger in Ohio, this is what I'm looking for: paper-thin patties smashed onto a ripping-hot griddle until the edges turn into crispy little beef lace, American cheese melted into every crack and crevice, and a soft bun sturdy enough to hold everything together without stealing the spotlight. After doing probably way too much deep-dive research on the topic, I think I've found the perfect example of a, uh, perfect smash burger in the state of Ohio at a hidden gem called Smash Buddies.

Yes, I want to be their newest buddy… mostly because I want to eat all their burgers. Let me tell you why.

This Tiny Spot Is Serving the Best Smash Burger in Ohio

Some restaurants try to be everything. Smash Buddies has chosen a different path, and I respect that. The veteran-owned restaurant started as a food truck cruising around Columbus before opening its first brick-and-mortar location at 460 South Front Street in the Brewery District. Two friends moved from the Pacific Northwest to Ohio in 2022, started cooking burgers for neighbors, and eventually decided the only sensible thing to do was quit their day jobs and bet on smash burgers (and I'm glad they did).

After just over a year, they won the 2024 Best Burger in Columbus during a local Trimark competition. That's impressive, especially in a city where people have opinions about burgers. Strong opinions. The kind that can start friendly debates over bun selection.

The Brewery District feels like a perfect home for a place like this. It's just south of Downtown Columbus, only minutes from German Village with its brick streets, historic homes, and The Book Loft. The Scioto Mile is nearby if you need a walk after lunch, and COSI is less than ten minutes away if you're making a day of exploring Ohio's capital.

What Makes Their Smash Burger So Special

The menu is short, and that's always a good sign. A focused menu tells me somebody cares more about getting one thing right than doing twenty things halfway.

The Original is exactly what I want from a smash burger: fresh beef, melted American cheese, and their signature Yacht Sauce. Nothing extra fighting for attention. Order a single, double, or triple depending on how ambitious you're feeling.

The All American piles on pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and mustard without losing the soul of the burger underneath. Kids get their own version because no child should grow up thinking frozen hockey-puck burgers are normal.

Then there are the weekly specials, which give regulars a reason to keep checking back. One week, it might be a chili burger. Another week, it's a jalapeño popper burger. My favorite might be the Black Cap Breakfast Burger, topped with cheddar, bacon, eggs, crispy tots, mayo, and Black Cap Hot Sauce. It's breakfast and lunch shaking hands and deciding everybody wins.

Smash Buddies also serves a patty melt, grilled cheese, BLT, chicken bacon ranch sandwich, seasoned tots dusted with Buddy Rub Blend, Loaded Tots covered in beef, grilled onions, cheese, and Yacht Sauce, plus vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream. It's a simple menu, and I wouldn't change a thing.

What It's Like To Visit

Walking into Smash Buddies feels a little like discovering the restaurant before everyone else starts talking about it. People aren't there to take glamorous photos of towering burgers that require unhinging your jaw. They're there because they know exactly what they're ordering. There's something refreshing about a place where the food does all the talking.

The staff keeps things moving, the atmosphere feels relaxed, and every burger comes off the flat-top looking like someone actually cared about making it. That's becoming rarer than it should be.

If you're searching for the best burgers, looking for hidden gem restaurants in Ohio, or wondering where to get smash burgers in Ohio, this little Columbus restaurant deserves a spot on your list.

What To Know Before You Go

The easiest parking is the garage off Blenkner Street, though street parking is usually available if you're willing to circle the block once or twice. Check the restaurant's social media before you go to see that week's burger special because they're worth planning around.

The next time you're planning a trip to Ohio, make Columbus part of the adventure. Wander German Village, spend a few hours exploring COSI, then reward yourself with a stop at Smash Buddies. I set out looking for the best smash burger in Ohio, and after those crispy edges and perfectly juicy center, I think I found exactly what I'd been chasing.
