The Easy Trail That Might As Well Be The Bird Capital Of North Carolina

When seeking a leisurely hike with impressive wildlife, choose the Lake Johnson East Loop Trail, an easy trail with lots of birds in North Carolina. Located in Lake Johnson Park in Raleigh, this lovely walk is essential for bringing some tranquility to our day. What could be more recuperative than a wooded forest with a peaceful lake, and a plentiful variety of beautiful birds?

One of the best features of the Lake Johnson Trail is the variety it offers for bird-watching.

It includes a 3.5-mile paved greenway loop, a 1.9-mile unpaved loop, and another 1 mile of out-and-backs to scenic lake overlooks. The paved portion leads us along the lake, through the woods, and across the dam.

The trail begins at the Eastern end of the lake near the dam where a gaggle of geese is out stretching its legs.

Follow the signs for the scenic overlook, and you'll see the trailhead on the right.

We're always grateful for the graceful gifts of Lake Johnson, such as the great blue herons and the great egrets.

Different parking areas are around the lake, along with several benches, and waste baskets for doggie bags.

This fuzzy little bird would rather float than fly - we all have those days.

The paved trail is split down the middle and wide enough for two-way traffic.

Some enjoy the shelter of the shady trees, such as the sweet barred owl.

How majestic this one looks on his perch up high.

Framed all in wood, the handsome bird sings a perfect song.

Keep watching, especially at dusk when the park closes.

You never know, a magical nighthawk may appear.
