The Rugged And Remote Hiking Trail In Missouri That Is Well-Worth The Effort

Hiking offers something for all of us. We can find short and sweet trails that take just a few minutes, hikes that will fill a day, and those that will challenge us. For that day when we want both a challenge and some alone time, we have plenty of trails to follow. But this remote hiking trail in Bonne Terre, Missouri, might be one of the best.

Be prepared for a hefty challenge if you decide to set off on the 10.6-mile Pike Run Trail, which meanders through St. Francois State Park.

Because the trail winds through undeveloped sections of the park, it tends to be quite quiet. If you're looking for some quiet time - just you and nature - you'll likely find it here.

While most hikers can traverse the trail in a little less than five hours, you can also take it slow and backpack overnight, if you're up for even more of an adventure.

But, first, make sure you're up for the challenge ahead on what's been described as a hard trail. Sturdy shoes are a must as you'll deal with elevation changes and navigate around downed trees and roots.

Keep an eye out for loose rocks, and use plenty of bug spray. The area can get quite buggy, and ticks are abundant. You'll likely run into quite a few spider webs.

However, all the challenges are worth it for the beautiful views and the wildlife you'll likely cross paths with along the way.

A popular equestrian trail, Pike Run Trail can get muddy, so keep that in mind before setting off. Definitely consider trekking it near the peak of the fall foliage.

If you hike when it's sunny, you'll find the trail is pretty shady. You'll probably still want to lather on the sunscreen, though.
