Perhaps the best thing about hiking in Missouri is that we can do it any time of the year - in the middle of a scorching hot summer day or right after a fresh snowfall. And there's no better way to admire the blossoming flowers of spring or the fall foliage than on a brisk hike. Some trails, however, are more conducive to year-round hiking that others. This loop trail in Missouri is picture-perfect all year around, and you'll probably want to hike it in each season. Come along as we show you why we think it is one of the best loop hikes in Missouri!
Traveling through Mark Twain National Forest, Moon Loop Trail tallies just over six miles - making it the perfect short day hike.
However, the trail does earn a moderate rating, mostly for some overgrowth and its penchant for getting muddy after rain. You'll also face a few steep climbs.
If you're hiking in the spring, be prepared for a lot of bugs and ticks. Lather on the bug spray, and bring it with you, too.
Fall promises gorgeous views. The leaves can make the path a bit slippery, though, so keep that in mind, especially if you're hiking after precipitation.
Keep watch for icy spots during the winter when the path, which passes a gentle waterfall, transforms into a snowy wonderland.
If you're a fan of quiet, you'll like the Moon Loop Trail. The trail usually doesn't get that busy.
Bring your pup along (as long as he remains leashed), and be prepared to share the trail with runners, backpackers, and horse riders.
You might also want to wear a pair of shoes you don't mind getting wet. The trail does include a creek crossing.
The trail also features a few surprises, including an old rock wall, the remnants of an unknown structure. You'll probably want to bring your camera along on this hike.
