1. The Biloxi Lighthouse

Having been built in 1848, the Biloxi Lighthouse is by far one of the most recognizable landmarks in the state. The lighthouse has gained much more recognition after surviving Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and, as such, is reportedly the most photographed landmark on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

2. Deer Island, MS

One of the closest islands to the coast of Mississippi, the sprawling 400 acres is home to ten different types of endangered species. Legend has it that the island is haunted by the ghost of a pirate who still roams the vicinity protecting his treasure.

One of the top attractions in Mississippi, this 444 mile span where American Indians used to settle tens of thousands of years ago includes beautiful scenery and landscapes that will take your breath away.

4. Tishomingo State Park

Located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, this state park has it all. Visitors can enjoy a truly unique landscape composed of massive rock formations and unusual plants found nowhere else in the state. Excavations have shown that Indians settled the area as early as 7,000 B.C. so it is only fitting that the park be named after an Indian chief.

5. Tombigbee State Park

Arguably one of the biggest tourist destinations in Mississippi, this state park offers numerous outdoor activities including sports, hiking, swimming, camping, fishing, and more.

6. Jackson Volcano

Jackson Volcano: Since it is covered by over 2,900 feet of sedimentary rock, Jackson volcano is not even visible from the surface, and being that it hasn’t erupted in over 75 million years, it is definitely one of the capital city’s best kept secrets.

7. Cotton Farms

Mississippi produces numerous crops but the state is known for cotton production. Not only does the fiber generate revenue for the state but the cotton farms are responsible for some of the state’s most breathtaking scenery.

8. Mississippi Petrified Forest

The only one of its kind in the eastern United States, Madison County’s Petrified Forest is a sight to be seen. Over 35 million years in the making, the forest boasts fields of wildflowers and honeysuckle vines in addition to the magnificent pine and cedar trees that fill the area.

9. Natchez Bridge on the Mississippi River

Running along the borders of ten states, the Mississippi River is one of the most well-known bodies of water in the United States. In Mississippi, the river runs through three cities: Vicksburg, Greenville, and Natchez. The Natchez Bridge, pictured here, is known for beautiful sunsets and has become a landmark itself.

10. Stanton Hall

Built in 1857 by an Irish immigrant, this Natchez home was just as impressive back then as it cost over $83,000 – and that was before being furnished. The home has since been restored giving visitors the opportunity to take walk through tours and experience what life was like for a wealthy southern family back in the late 1800’s.
