When it comes to unique places in Mississippi, Buttercup Flats definitely fits the bill. It’s not just unique to the state, though. As one of the largest wetlands of its kind in the southeast, it’s unique to the region, too. Luckily for us, though, it’s right here in Mississippi.
Spanning hundreds of thousands of acres, the De Soto National Forest boasts recreational areas, hiking trails, and one of the largest pitcher plant wetlands in the southeastern U.S.
The pitcher plant wetlands, which are formally known as Buttercup Flats, can be found in Wiggins.
Quite the sight, the sprawling bog is filled with pitcher plants, sundews, and other carnivorous plants. (Yep, carnivorous, meaning the plants eat insects!)
Carnivorous plants aren't all you'll find at Buttercup Flats, though.
The site is actually is home to an array of other plants, such as orchids, pipeworts, and white top grass.
Wetlands like Buttercup Flats were once common in the southeast; however, they’ve all but disappeared due to fire suppression.
Fortunately, the U.S. Forest Service saw the importance of Buttercup Flats and has worked diligently to restore it to its natural splendor.
