Touch the Sky Prairie is a beautiful stretch of prairie in southwestern Minnesota. It’s in Rock County, near the small town of Luverne.
The prairie covers around 1,200 acres. It’s one of the remaining sections of the northern tallgrass prairie in Minnesota.
An unpaved trail through the prairie lets visitors take in the views. The trail is short and sweet, about 1.3 miles there and back.
Being prairie, it’s full of big sky and wide-open expanses. A few trees are scattered across the landscape, as well as plenty of tall, waving grasses. You might even spot a prickly pear cactus nestled among the grass!
If you visit in the summertime, you’ll also come across native wildflowers. There is a wide variety of flowers here, and they draw in plenty of birds and insects.
Soon, you’ll encounter a small, slow creek strewn with some of the pink quartzite that is abundant in this area.
The creek flows into a low but lovely waterfall. It is like an oasis in an otherwise flat, empty prairie.
This peaceful waterfall is unlike anywhere else in Minnesota. It is well worth the walk through wildflowers and waving grasses!
