At first glance, Minnesota may not seem like a home where buffalo roam. After all, our state is known more for its 10,000 lakes than for its vast prairies or endless blue skies. But Minnesota is home to both of those things in abundance. You'll find prairie landscapes in many places around the state, such as at Bluestem Prairie SNA in Glyndon, or at Touch the Sky Prairie in Luverne. It is near this second spot that you'll find a Minnesota state park where buffalo still roam. Head to Minnesota's southwestern corner to visit Blue Mounds State Park, a manigifcent nature area that preserves pink quartzite cliffs, waving prairie grasses, and a resident buffalo herd. Here's what you need to know:
Blue Mounds State Park is a beautiful state park in the tiny southwestern Minnesota town of Luverne. Covering just 60 acres, this park is much smaller than many. But it holds an amazing beauty that makes the trip more than worth it.
The most famous attraction at Blue Mounds is its long stand of rugged pink quartzite cliffs. These cliffs rise above an open prairie, so they're an unexpected site in this flat area of mostly farmland.
The cliffs are unlike anything else in Minnesota. Trails throughout the park will take you along the top and bottom of the rock. Both trails are highly recommended, each offering a unique view of the region.
From the top, you'll find a wonderful panorama of the surrounding landscape, from native wildflowers to distant farms and fields.
And along the bottom, you'll find unique cliffs that tower above you. At some points along the trail, you can often find climbers scrabbling up the face of the rock.
Of course, the cliffs aren't the only reason to visit. Blue Mounds is also home to a small buffalo herd. It's one of the only places in Minnesota to see buffalo roam.
You can't get too close, but there is a viewing area near which the buffalo often graze. This is a fun way to see a species that once roamed free across Minnesota!
Blue Mounds State Park is a beautiful place to see both a breathtaking landscape and interesting wildlife. If you ever get the chance, plan a trip to this out-of-the-way park. You'll love the hiking trails, camping facilities, and nature! You can learn more from the official website for Blue Mounds State Park.
