The Paddling Trail in Minnesota That’s Better Than Most Hikes
This scenic water trail in Minnesota offers incredible views without the tough climb. Here’s why it’s better than a hike.
Hiking is a great way to get outside, but for a totally different outdoor experience, I don't think anything beats paddling. Swapping your boots for a boat lets your arms and the river do the heavy lifting while your legs take a break. One of my favorite paddling trails in Minnesota has the same kind of wooded scenery you'd expect on a hike—but from a much different perspective. A trip along the Cannon River State Water Trail is a perfect way to explore a chunk of our state's gorgeous Driftless Area as you float along a bluff-lined river valley. It offers one of the best reasons I can think of to swap your hiking stick for a paddle.
Where This Paddling Trail Is and What Makes It Unique
The Cannon River runs through a handful of counties in southeastern Minnesota, but I think the best stretch for a quick day trip is the section between Cannon Falls and Miesville (or Welch). This section is a state-designated Wild and Scenic River—so it's beautiful—with only a few stretches of mild rapids, so you even beginners can enjoy the float. You'll find plenty of places along the way where you can explore the banks, and if you don't own a canoe or kayak, there are several local outfitters who can rent you gear and arrange a shuttle back to town. Why It's Better Than a Traditional Hike
The Land of 10,000 Lakes is home to some of the best hiking trails in the U.S., but getting out on the water offers a different kind of outdoor adventure that can even be relaxing at times. Instead of an obstacle, the river becomes a highway, and on the slack sections, you don't even have to worry about paddling if you don't want to. Drink in the scenery as you drift along below towering limestone bluffs, listening to the water ripple along your gunwales, waving to hikers and cyclists on the Cannon Valley Trail when it gets close to the water—one of the most scenic bike trails in Minnesota. Another benefit: You can bring a cooler and grab a drink or snack whenever you want.
What You'll See Along the Way
As you leave Cannon Falls and head downstream, the river leaves the open farmland and enters a gorge lined with tall limestone walls and thick woods. Early in the season, you might spot the rare dwarf trout lily blooming along the banks where a blue heron or a great egret may be fishing. Bald eagles soar overhead, while turtles sun themselves on logs.
By the time you reach the Miesville or Welch, you'll understand why the Cannon was designated a state water trail. Whether you're an avid paddler or just looking for something different to do outdoors, this float's an afternoon well spent. Since water levels fluctuate, always check the weather and safety updates on the Minnesota DNR website before heading out.
