Minnesota's waterfalls are among the best in the country - and maybe even the world. There are more than 100 waterfalls to explore within our borders. Some require remote hiking, but most of Minnesota's best waterfalls are easily accessed within state parks.
The latter is certainly the case for Gooseberry Falls. Because popular spot Minnesota's unofficial favorite waterfall, we think it's important that everyone take a trip there at least once. Here's what you need to know about this beautiful spot:
Gooseberry Falls is a waterfall at the beautiful Gooseberry Falls State Park. Address: 3206 MN-61, Two Harbors, MN 55616.
The park, among the most popular in Minnesota, covers 1,687 acres of land alongside Lake Superior.
With several miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, there is plenty to do.
The trails lead through thick forest, over ancient rock formations along the lake, and alongside the 23-mile Gooseberry River.
It is this river that leads to the highlight of the park, and what may be described as the gem of the North Shore: Gooseberry Falls.
Access the falls by a quick hike from the parking area. A nearby interpretive site and gift shop will tell you more about the area. When you're all ready, head down the path.
When you get there, you'll be amazed. Gooseberry Falls is a multi-level waterfall surrounded by a tall, rocky gorge. The three falls fall in close succession over a rocky gorge.
Guests can climb down to the base of the falls to get a closer look.
Or, you can stay up high to see the water continue its rushing flow towards Lake Superior from above.
No matter your vantage point or when you visit - the frozen waterfall is beautiful in winter, too - you will love your trip to Gooseberry Falls.
