This Minnesota Waterfall Road Trip Is Beyond Beautiful

From Gooseberry to Grand Portage, you'll love this Minnesota waterfalls road trip featuring the state's biggest and most beautiful falls.

If you're up for an epic adventure, you have to try this Minnesota waterfalls road trip! You get to see countless stunning waterfalls in seven northern Minnesota locations, on top of experiencing one of the most famously beautiful drives along the North Shore.

Starting from Duluth or Grand Portage, our waterfall road trip in Minnesota takes a little over three hours of driving from start to finish—which leaves plenty of time for explore the falls. You can spend the night at one end, or even camp halfway through to make it last. But if you're feeling up to it, it is possible to make this trip to seven of the best waterfalls in Minnesota in one long day (but don't try to one-day round-trip it in the winter).

1. Middle and Lower Falls - Gooseberry Falls State Park

The legendary Gooseberry Falls mark the first stop on the trip. The three levels of falls are all amazing in any weather—and they're right down the path from the parking lot, making this stop one of the easiest for viewing!

2. High Falls and Illgen Falls - Tettegouche State Park

Both of these waterfalls at Tettegouche State Park are beautiful! The High Falls are definitely the fan favorite, but both are within a short distance of each other.

3. Manitou Cascades - George Crosby Manitou State Park

Next, we head a little bit inland to George H. Crosby Manitou State Park, a beautiful backcountry park where you can find epic falls with just about a mile of hiking.

4. Temperance River Gorge - Temperance River State Park

The falls at Temperance River State Park head right under the highway and make a quick, stunning stop along the way to the next destination.

5. Cascade River Falls - Cascade River State Park

Continuing North, the Cascades are one of the most amazing stops on the trip. This park alone has enough waterfalls for an entire day of marveling.

6. Devil's Kettle and Upper Falls - Judge C.R. Magney State Park

The famed Devil's Kettle and the gorgeous Upper Falls make Judge C.R. Magney one of the best stops on this trip. Enjoy the mystery of Devil's Kettle, or better yet, try and solve it! Where does the water go?

7. Pigeon River High Falls - Grand Portage State Park

The last stop of your trip, the short, half-mile hike to the High Falls will show you tons of angles of this beautiful natural wonder. And there are many places to rest and take in the views as you hike.
