Lake Charles Might Be Louisiana’s Most Underrated Food City

I spent several days eating my way through Lake Charles and discovered some of the best Cajun food in southwest Louisiana.

When we think of Louisiana's culinary landscape, our minds naturally gravitate toward New Orleans. The Crescent City is undeniably a food lover’s paradise—the birthplace of iconic staples like the po’boy, the muffuletta, and oysters Rockefeller. But while NOLA commands the spotlight, the vibrant flavors of Lake Charles have been quietly flying under the radar… until now.

On a recent trip to Southwest Louisiana, I set out to explore the local dining scene and barely scratched the surface of what this city has to offer. If you’re planning a getaway to the area, do your taste buds a favor and add these spots to your itinerary. Here is exactly where to eat in Lake Charles.

Why Lake Charles Is Quietly Becoming a Cajun Food Destination

Lake Charles is a fascinating corner of Louisiana where Cajun cuisine meets Texas flair. From delicious boudin to BBQ, you can truly take a bite out of just about every culture here. Speaking of boudin, you’d be doing yourself a disservice not to tackle at least part of the SWLA Boudin Trail. As Louisiana’s favorite finger food, you’ll quickly learn why this rice sausage is so popular. My personal favorite is found just outside of Lake Charles, at B & O Kitchen in Sulphur. The Benoit family has been making 13 types of sausages since it opened its doors in 1983, and it’s worthy of a side quest. The boudin balls are my favorite, especially the ones stuffed with pepperjack cheese.

The Best Breakfast in Lake Charles: Biscuits n Jamz

Biscuits n Jamz is a locally owned restaurant in Lake Charles that’s the go-to spot for Southern comfort food. From boudin hash to chicken and waffles, you seriously can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. They had recently moved into their new home on N Martin Luther King Hwy, and it was the perfect atmosphere to start the day. There are plenty of tables, a lengthy menu with a wide range of options, and friendly service. 10/10 no notes.

My shrimp and grits were pure perfection in a bowl: house-made grits topped with gouda cheese, then sautéed shrimp, onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes. It's not a meal I could start every day with, but calories don't count on vacation, right? My friend had the French toast, and it looked almost too pretty to eat.

Where to Find Authentic Cajun Lunch in Lake Charles

If you’re looking for a comfy, casual restaurant in Lake Charles that the whole family will enjoy, head over to SHUCKS! Founded in 1995, SHUCKS! is all about authentic Cajun cuisine, including a side of Southern hospitality. There are two locations, one in Abbeville and another right here in Lake Chuck; both offer menus full of family recipes passed down from generation to generation.

As the name implies, they serve up some of the finest oysters in town. Regretfully, I have a confession to make: I don’t actually like oysters. (Keep that between us, or I'll have my Louisiana local card revoked!)

Because of that, I opted for the crab cakes instead—and honestly? They were some of the best I’ve ever had in my life. We’re talking massive chunks of jumbo lump crab meat, completely devoid of the heavy fillers that ruin lesser recipes. These were done absolutely right.

Where Dinner Turned Into the Main Event

For a more refined take on New American cuisine, Restaurant Calla is a slam dunk. The menu features a wide range of seasonal small plates and entrees, along with a robust craft cocktail menu, all in a sleek and inviting atmosphere. Perfect for a date night or the final stop after spending some time exploring Lake Charles. Fried oysters, bone marrow tartare, and New Orleans-style BBQ shrimp adorn the sharables menu, and I strongly recommend the blue crab beignets. For the main event, treat yourself to the 1855 hanger steak with fries, the prime short ribs, or the stuffed quail. They even have a double smash burger, which is a fan favorite!

As a New Orleans native, I have high standards for flavor, and Lake Charles exceeded every single one. I'm already plotting my return trip. Next time you find yourself cruising through Southwest Louisiana, don't just drive through. Pull over, park, and treat yourself to this underrated culinary gem.
