Cypremort Point State Park is located at the very end of La. Hwy 319. The drive down is one of those road trips where you begin to wonder if you’re headed in the right direction. After all, it is one of the few locations near the Gulf that can still be reached by car. As you make your way down, you’ll see fewer and fewer homes and more fishing camps between the cypress trees and marshland. Speaking of, Cypremort means “dead cypress” in French, which gives you a hint as to the landscape you’re headed for.

What You’ll Experience at Cypremort Point State Park

Just when you think you’re about to run out of road, this hidden state park appears, seemingly out of nowhere. The 185-acre state park is far from the largest state park in Louisiana, but it does have some very unique features that are worth the road trip. For starters, its location on Vermilion Bay appeals to anglers of all skill levels. The Bay opens up into the Gulf, so folks can head out to deeper waters if they so choose. Flounder and redfish are pretty common for folks who fish the Bay, and there’s a fish-cleaning station at the park for those who end up catching their dinner. You'll likely see several people fishing and crabbing from the shore, too.

The winds of the Bay provide the perfect place for sailing, and it’s not uncommon to spot several sailboats in the water. There’s a half-mile stretch of beach to enjoy, so pull up a patch of sand and watch the boats pass by!

The park is surrounded by marshlands, too. Take some time to stroll down the boardwalk and do a little wildlife watching. Your typical swamp critters, including nutria, muskrat, and alligators, are common sightings, but with a little luck, you might also spot deer, rabbits, possums, red fox, or even the elusive Louisiana black bear roaming around.

I’m a sucker for sunsets, and I’ll find the best place to watch the sunset whenever I’m traveling. I can confidently tell you that Cypremort Point State Park has some of the best sunset views in Louisiana. Do yourself a favor and stick around until sunset—you won’t regret it! The sunrises over the marsh are pretty spectacular, too, but I’m a sunset girly through and through.

Since this small-town state park is pretty remote, I’d recommend spending a night or two in the area. I say this lovingly: this is a great corner of Louisiana to do nothing. Fishing is a way of life down here, but outside of that, it’s just you and nature.
