Minnesota is full of waterfalls! The most well-known are on the north shore, from Gooseberry Falls in Two Harbors to the High Falls of the Pigeon River in Grand Portage. And further south, Minnehaha Falls and Minneopa Falls make a splash with visitors. But there are plenty of other wonderful waterfalls in Minnesota, including the little-known spot we'd like to feature today. Tucked away in Minnesota's southwestern corner, Prairie Waterfall is a place of quiet beauty that should be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Read on below to see what you'll find when you get there:
Touch the Sky Prairie is a little-known prairie in southwestern Minnesota. It's in the small town of Luverne, about 200 miles southwest of the Twin Cities.
Touch the Sky Prairie is part of the Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge covers over 12,000 acres, with Touch the Sky stretching across 1,200 acres of it.
The prairie preserves a wide variety of plants and animals that are not seen in other parts of the world. Uncommon animal species, such as the Dakota skipper or grasshopper sparrow, make the northern prairie home. Without protection of their habitat, they face the threat of extinction.
Touch The Sky Prairie has trails that let visitors explore the area. They are unpaved trails mowed through the grass, so be sure to bring proper footwear if it has been snowy or raining lately.
If you follow the trail long enough - just over a mile - you'll come across a lovely creek. Follow it as it winds through the grass...
...and you'll find Prairie Waterfall. The creek tumbles over low stones into a wide pool. This is a place of quiet beauty. Because few know about it, you're unlikely to run into many other visitors.
Instead of a tall, rushing waterfall, Prairie Waterfall is a low trickle. Surrounded by the wide-open prairie, full of big skies and waving grasses, it's absolutely spectacular. There's no other place like it in Minnesota!
Have you ever been to Prairie Waterfall? It's a beautiful place to visit for those looking for a quiet nature area in Minnesota! While you're in the area, also consider paying a visit to nearby Blue Mounds State Park and Pipestone National Monument.
