8 Gorgeous Frozen Waterfalls In Maine That Must Be Seen To Be Believed

Most people are aware of just how many wonderful waterfalls in Maine there are to discover, but did you know that some are even more gorgeous in the winter? Like many things in the outdoors of Maine, winter just makes them even more beautiful. Some of these waterfalls will be familiar and some are probably completely hidden. Nevertheless, this winter, take a look around and you might be lucky and find them completely frozen over like something out of a sci-fi movie!

1. Acadia National Park Falls

Have you ever visited Acadia National Park in winter? No? Well there are frozen waterfalls everywhere you turn, some named, and others seasonal.

Literally everywhere.

2. Runaround Pond Falls, Durham

Even running water looks extra magical in the winter, thanks to icy surroundings. And you don't have to head into the wilderness to find sights like this! You'll find this beauty on the Chesley Meadows Preserve in Durham.

3. Screw Auger Falls, Oxford County

About 45 minutes from Snow Falls, you'll find Screw Auger Falls. These Bear River-sourced falls are comprised of two impressive drops, each 30-feet high. You can't swim here in the summer, so might as well head here in the winter.

4. Jewell Falls, Portland

Like we said, you don't have to venture into the wilderness to find incredible waterfalls. Jewell Falls is tucked away in Portland, just waiting for a hard freeze to turn into something out of the Antarctica.

5. Camden Falls, Camden

Camden is pretty picture-perfect already. But add some snow and ice, and a lovely little waterfalls, and this is what you get! Camden is often referred to as "where the mountains meet the sea," and this surging frozen waterfall (actually called Megunticook Falls) is just one of the town's many gorgeous winter sights.

6. Peaks Island, Casco Bay

These strange falls on Casco Bay form above the high tide line as a result of slowly escaping groundwater, seeping through cracks in the rocks.

7. Stroudwater Dam, Portland

The Stroudwater Dam isn't difficult to find and it's often overlooked for some of Maine's more "known" waterfalls. But, we love checking it out in the winter to see the accumulated ice. While you're at it, check out the Stroudwater Trail.

8. River Falls

While Maine's beautifully flowing cascades are hard to beat, some of our state's more humble river falls deserve a mention too! The rapids and falls found dotting our state's rivers and streams may not tumble hundreds of feet down a rock face, but they create a whole lot of magic just as they are.
