The Fore River Sanctuary in Portland offers a beautiful way to disappear into nature without having to venture out of the city.

The natural area is 85 acres and offers a few different trails to explore.

Any trail in the sanctuary will offer views of the Fore River, which is a nearly 6-mile body of water that flows between Portland South Portland.

The Fore River Sanctuary White Trail is just over 3 miles and includes a relatively flat and well-maintained surface. Markers are easy to find, making this a stress-free journey.

While the hike itself has plenty to see and enjoy, the water views are only part of the fun!

The route includes Jewell Falls, Portland's only natural waterfall.

Any time of year you're likely to find water flowing, though the winter may have only a trickle.

But visit after a rain, in the spring or in the summer and the flow of water is impressive for a city-based waterfall.

It's fun to see the waterfall and explore the rocks at the base. Once you've had enough time here, simply continue along the loop to make your way back to the trailhead.
