This Two-Tiered Waterfall In Maine Is Definitely Worth The Hike

Screw Auger Falls in Grafton Notch State Park, Maine, offers a beautiful double cascade waterfall and a straightforward hike suitable for many visitors.

Is Maine the perfect state for outdoor endeavors? We're gonna go ahead and say yes! That's why we love giving you awesome ideas for getting outside. Some are easy while others are more challenging, but they all offer a ton of beauty. Now that the weather is nicer and the temperatures are (mostly!) warmer, we've got our sights set on the best ways to explore the state. This waterfall with a double cascade is a wonderful option.

While there's plenty to do and see in Grafton Notch State Park in Newry, Screw Auger Falls with its double cascade is must-see.

The hike is fairly straight-forward, making it doable for a wide variety of people. Though, anyone with mobility issues might find it challenging simply because it's an outdoor trail.

Drive about a mile from the park entrance to get to the Screw Auger Falls area which is marked. The official Screw Auger Trail is slightly less than a half-mile. But, the route to the falls is just .1 mile. And there are guardrails leading to the falls themselves.

The first drop is beautiful at 30 feet. It cascades over a granite ledge into an impressively large gorge.

We were actually surprised at how large it feels!

The second falls are also about 30', but being lower they don't feel quite as grand as the higher ones.

There are plenty of places to explore here, but be mindful of how slippery things can get.

It's a beautiful walk, but there are many areas that (unlike the path to view the falls) don't have guard rails.

The entire area is lovely and it's worth continuing to explore once you've taken in Screw Auger Falls.

The trail is an out-and-back route, so to return to the start simply retrace your steps on the marked path.

Screw Auger Falls is located in Grafton Notch State Park in Newry.

Address: 1941 Bear River Road, Newry, ME 04261.
