When you live in a state with so much natural beauty, hiking is often the best way to explore. Illinois has some of the most gorgeous state parks, offering an array of trails from easy to strenuous, and some of these trails will even take you to a magnificent waterfall. If you are looking for a relatively easy hike to go out and enjoy nature, we suggest the Ottawa Canyon trail at Starved Rock State Park! This out-and-back hike is just a one-mile round trip and (spoiler alert!) ends with a lovely waterfall.

With only a 101-foot elevation gain, it is easy enough for all skill levels, including children who will love seeing the waterfall at the end.
The trail is accessible throughout the year, and if you come during the winter, you may be greeted with an impressive frozen waterfall!
Experienced ice climbers are allowed to climb the icefall here as long as the conditions are right.
The Ottawa Canyon Trail l is moderately busy, so you may see other hikers along the way. You are also allowed to bring your dog, but please use a leash.
Meander along the easy-to-navigate pathway through remarkable canyons. Just seeing these stunning rock formations makes it worth the hike!
The view of the waterfall from the canyon is quite a sight! Remember, waterfalls are dependent upon rainfall and snowmelt. Depending on when you go, you may not see the most impressive fall, but getting some fresh air and exercise on a hike is always worthwhile.
